Featured Case Summary: RedGuard

RedGuard is a Wichita-based company that manufactures modular office buildings, storage units and blast-resistant buildings. The company has participated in the PPI intern program for the past three years and continues to work on lowering overall operation costs while reducing environmental impact. This year, RedGuard asked Brayden Lexow, intern, to find ways to reduce its hazardous waste generation and to research possible avenues for solar generation systems at three of its locations.

Information about Annual Emissions Inventory Reports

The SLEIS website for Annual Emissions Inventory Reports has changed to https://sleis.kdhe.ks.gov. Make sure to update your internet browser bookmarks.

2025 reporting year reports will open in in SLEIS in mid-Jan. and are due April 1, 2026. If you need help to update a report before January, please email kdhe.sleis@ks.gov to request assistance.

Report fees will remain the same as last year. Class I and Class II facilities will owe fees based on emissions tonnages. Class I facilities owe a base fee even if zero tons are reported. Fees are due at the time the SLEIS report is submitted, and if not submitted prior to or on the deadline of April 1, a $200/day late fee is accrued, including weekends, until the report and fees are submitted. Refer to the fee structure document for more information.

APPLY FOR A 2026 P2 INTERN

Does your business want to explore pollution prevention opportunities but lacks time or human capital? A P2 Intern can give your facility an environmental jumpstart.

Who can apply?

Any business, industry, facility, or entity located in Kansas can host an intern if viable pollution prevention projects have been identified. Interns are assigned to work 10 weeks directly at the facility(s) the company applicant has identified.

For companies that only have one or two projects, or aren't ready for a full-time intern, there is the circuit rider option. A circuit rider intern typically visits 6-8 locations for 1-2 days each and focuses on one or two projects per company.

What an intern can do for you

Businesses receive well-developed, specific recommendations that can benefit the company bottom line and the Kansas environment through projects that target:

  • energy and water use
  • toxic chemicals
  • air emissions
  • hazardous and solid wastes
  • employee risks
  • sustainable material management

Check out our library of case summaries of previous projects.

Online hazardous waste training

Hazardous waste handlers are required to complete training annually, and new employees must be trained within six months of taking a position that requires they handle hazardous waste. This training needs to be documented and maintained for at least three years. PPI offers online training that includes a certificate of completion for $50 per user.
