Quarterly News & Updates from Kansas SHRM
Congratulations to Leslie Cunningham, SHRM-SCP, SPHR!

Recipient of the 2019 Trombold Achievement and HR Professional of the Year Award

On September 13, 2019, Leslie Cunningham received the 2019 Trombold Achievement and HR Professional of the Year Award at the 30th annual Kansas SHRM State Conference in Overland Park. Leslie becomes the 28th recipient of this award. Dale Jones, CEO at Tri-County Telephone, and Wanda Forse, Leslie's mother, were present to see Leslie accept the award.

Leslie is the Director of Human Resources and Safety at Tri-County Telephone in Council Grove. She has always believed in sharing her passion for HR and has done so by making presentations on HR topics to local SHRM Chapters and other community groups including Emporia State University and the National Rural Broadband Association Human Resource Conference. She has also testified at the Kansas State Legislature, most recently on Ban the Box legislation.

Leslie has been a member of National SHRM for 15 years and a local Chapter member for 18 years. She is currently a member of the Human Resources Professionals Association of Greater Emporia, where she is serving as Chapter President. She has also been a member of the Topeka and Manhattan SHRM Chapters in the past. Leslie has volunteered for Kansas SHRM serving as the Chair of the Publication Committee for the annual conference and on the Employment Law and Employee Benefits Conference Committee.

Leslie currently serves on the Emporia State University Corporate Advisory Board and is Chair of the Nominating Committee for the Kansas Bluegrass Association Board of Directors. She has previously served on the Kansas Hospital Association Nursing Shortage Task Force.

Congratulations, Leslie!
2019 Diversity and Inclusion Champion Award presented to Human Resources Manhattan Network

The Kansas State Council of SHRM recognized Human Resources Manhattan Network (HRMN) as they; model, encourage and promote diversity and inclusion in the community and the workplace. HRMN demonstrated work in the area of diversity and inclusion that goes above and beyond what is expected through normal organizational responsibilities. In addition, this organization has worked diligently in providing a positive impact on others in the community and the workplace. HRMN has involved community members in addressing their need to retain and recruit employees to the Manhattan community by offering a diverse and inclusive environment.

They are also hosting a Diversity Workshop open to the community in December.
The award was presented at the Kansas SHRM conference in September held in Overland Park, KS.
Cindy Volanti, HRMN President, and Jack Allston, Diversity Director of HRMN, accepted the award.
As part of the award a $500 donation will be made to HRMN to be used to support their Diversity and Inclusion efforts.

We will be accepting nominations for the 2020 Diversity and Inclusion Champion Award in the Spring.

SHRM Advocacy Team (A-Team)

226 people signed up to join the A-Team at the state conference, which was more than 50% of participants! The A-Team is a group of people who said they want to be notified via email when there is proposed legislation that affects the HR community. The email notification they receive explains the proposed legislation (whether national or KS state level) and explains SHRM's position on the legislation. It also provides a template for an email to the individual's specific legislator and their contact info if the recipient would like to let their legislator know their thoughts.

The A-Team isn't about being political and you don't have to agree with all of SHRM's positions. It's about being informed and using our voices to help educate our legislators when needed and shape policy that makes sense for the workplace BEFORE it becomes a law.  If you missed the sign up at the conference, you can sign up online  here.
