Kansas dyslexia initiatives and
KESA compliance
| | |
By Dr. Laurie Curtis, KSDE assistant director of teaching and learning for literacy
There are three specific requirements related to the state’s dyslexia initiatives that are connected to KESA compliance. Two of those requirements have to do with professional learning of teachers and one is related to universal screening for reading risk.
One type of professional learning is specific to new educators and is referred to as the KSDE Initial Dyslexia Training Modules. New teachers hired for the first time in Kansas, or teachers new to teaching in Kansas that are licensed and/ or endorsed elementary; early childhood unified; high incidence special education K-12; ELA 5-12; reading specialist; school psychologists, are required to receive these Initial Dyslexia Training Modules provided by KSDE.
Read more here about the Kansas dyslexia initiatives and their relation to KESA compliance.

ICYMI: KSDE to release 2026-27 version of the Kansas Education Data System (KEDS)
| | |
By Christopher Fletcher, KSDE IT team
The Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) is preparing to release the 2026-27 version of KEDS, the Kansas Education Data System. This initiative aims to improve data standardization, enhance system interoperability, and create synergy with the Statewide Longitudinal Data System (SLDS).
The primary procedural change with KEDS is transitioning from a file upload method of reporting to a sync method which is enabled by an Application Programming Interface (API) connection between KSDE and the district or school’s student information system (SIS).

Information provided for the
Kansas Alternate Literacy Screener
| | |
The Kansas Alternate Early Literacy Screener has been renamed the “Kansas Alternate Literacy Screener.” It is only intended for students with an IEP who have a most significant cognitive disability. Teachers will assess students’ early literacy skills using simple rubrics.
As a result of Kansas HB 2485, KSDE has had to make changes to the Kansas Alternate Literacy Screener. Teachers will need to administer all the rubrics for the student's grade. The score for each rubric will be entered into the score sheet; the scoring guide will assign a performance level based on the total score from all rubrics.
Districts will then report high risk, some risk, or at benchmark through the Kansas Education Data System (KEDS) by Oct. 10, for this fall and May 28, 2027, for the spring. No entry will be entered for eighth grade comprehension based on the Dynamic Learning Map® (DLM®) as has been done in the past. KSDE is in the process of building out the alternate literacy screener for grades fourth through eighth which will be used for the 2027-28 school year.
For more information on EOYA reporting, refer to the Dyslexia Requirements and Recommendations webpage and Dyslexia Requirements and Recommendations document.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library of
Kansas Day is Friday, Aug. 14
| | |
Since 1995, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library has been helping children discover the joy of books and build a lifelong love of reading. What began as Dolly Parton’s dream has grown into the world’s leading early childhood book-gifting program, providing more than 200 million free books to children across the world.
The Imagination Library partners with local communities to make sure books reach children right at home. Enrolled children, birth through five years of age, receive a carefully selected book at no cost to their family each month.
On Friday, Aug. 14, we're celebrating the thousands of Kansas children currently receiving books. Schools can celebrate Dolly's vision and nurture a love of reading in all Kansas kids by doing any of the following:
- Read with your students.
-
Share enrollment details with families who have a child under five years of age who might not yet be enrolled.
-
Share the Parent Resources from the Imagination Library website below to help families get the most out of reading together.
