Honors Student Wins First Place and Saves Company $11,000
Lauren Groover is a senior, anticipating graduation in December 2019, with a Bachelor of Science in Computational and Applied Mathematics. This past November, she was afforded the opportunity to participate in Kennesaw State University's (KSU) "R Day." This event, hosted by the Department of Statistics and Analytical Sciences, celebrates students' work in R, a free software environment for statistical computing and graphics.
Lauren's poster presentation, "Increasing the Bottom Line by Thousands," focused on marketing and retention strategies for athletic clubs and went on to win first place in the Undergraduate Poster category. Through her efforts, Lauren helped LifeTime Fitness discover a gap in their memberships and was able to reconcile over $11,000 in revenue for the company. In addition to her winning presentation and revenue boosting success, Lauren says that "[what] started as simply an Honors Learning Experience in a statistics class" turned into "falling in love with statistics (using R specifically)."

After graduation, Lauren and her husband will be moving to Colorado, pursuing a dream they've had for several years. An avid lover of the outdoors, Lauren lit up when talking about her move. She said, "My husband and I have dreamed of moving to Colorado since 2016, but I knew I had a great setup here at Kennesaw State, so we decided I would finish my degree first. Over the past three years, we have told everyone that we are moving to Colorado and in every decision we have made, we have had Colorado in the back of our minds."
Once in Colorado, Lauren plans on continuing her education through Georgia Tech's Online Master of Science in Analytics program. After graduating with her graduate degree, she plans to pursue a career in analytics. She says, "I love, love, love working in R and Python, so if I am able to stick with that for a career, that would be great! I have several contacts from different professions including a financial analyst, an operations research analyst, and a quantitative analyst. Any of these careers would be simply amazing. Only time will tell where I end up!"

Honors Student to Present Research on Preterm Infants
Omar Daouk is an Honors student who will graduate with an undergraduate degree in Biology, with a concentration in Pre-Professional Medicine. In his time at Kennesaw State University (KSU), he has had the opportunity to participate in three different fields of research.
In the summer of 2017, he assisted the laboratory activities of the Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology Department (EEOB). That fall, he transitioned to the Molecular and Cellular Biology Department (MCB), putting him closer to medically-related research. In the spring, he participated in KSU's 23rd Annual Symposium of Student Scholars, where he presented his research efforts.
With a minor in Applied Statistics and Data Analysis, Omar hopes to apply his efforts in research to the medical field with an analytical approach. He has already gained some exposure in applying his approach as part of his experience with Grow Baby Grow, a research program at KSU focused on the development of preterm infants. During the same semester, Daouk participated and placed third in the Department of Statistics and Analytical Sciences' "R Day," an event geared towards celebrating R, a free software environment for statistical computing and graphics. His analytical and statistical endeavors have paid off, as he has been awarded the CarMax Auto Finance Scholarship, a two-year scholarship for Kennesaw State University students who are planning to work in the increasingly critical fields of data analytics and applied statistics.
Omar will be presenting his work at the 2019 National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR), the largest conference on undergraduate research in the country, hosted at KSU later this semester.

Honors Student Involved in Research to Help Patients After Cerebrovascular Attack
Honors student
Phillip Williams, a Biology major, is currently working on a research study involving patients who have experienced a cerebrovascular attack (CVA). Under the direction of one of the hospital's neurosurgeons, Phillip is helping conduct clinical research with patients who have had a CVA and an emergency surgical procedure that is performed to remove blood clots in the brain and potentially reverse a CVA's debilitating effects.
In order to follow his medical passion and gain experience in the field, Phillip took a year off between his sophomore and junior years to complete a 12-month Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program. The program offers a mix of classroom learning, clinical shifts on an ambulance and in the emergency room (ER). For Phillip, this experience reaffirmed his love for working with hospital patients. "As soon as I started the ER clinicals, I knew that it was where I wanted to work until medical school," he said. He began working as an Emergency Room Technician as soon as a position opened up. This role, Phillip says, "has provided so many great opportunities to meet doctors and learn more about the field of medicine." In fact, it's been this role that connected Phillip with patients who have experienced a CVA.
Phillip, a former high school valedictorian, four-year Zell Miller Scholarship recipient, and past Kennesaw State University Cycling Club President, is planning to present his research results at the 2019 National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR).
