Brightfields Academy is Back!

Do you have a brownfield or closed landfill in your community that you’d like to reuse to host clean energy? Interested in learning how to prepare for EPA brownfields grants and other federal funding to deploy “brightfields”? Join Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) and KSU TAB for our Brightfields Academy this fall, which is a 5-part series of virtual workshops to help you prepare for brownfields funding with clean energy reuse in mind. RMI’s Brightfields Accelerator supports communities who want to reactivate their brownfields and landfills by providing technical assistance to install clean energy.

Topics include:

  • Workshop 1 (September 12, 2024): Introduction to Brightfields
  • Workshop 2 (September 26, 2024): Evaluating Brownfield Site Feasibility for Clean Energy Reuse
  • Workshop 3 (October 22, 2024): Strategically Integrating Brightfields into Brownfield Grant Applications Part I
  • Workshop 4 (early November 2024): Strategically Integrating Brightfields into Brownfield Grant Applications Part II
  • Workshop 5 (early December, 2024): Beyond Brownfield Grants: Understanding Funding and Financing Opportunities

Key details:

  • When: Up to five 90-min workshops from September to December 2024
  • Where: Virtually via Zoom
  • Cost: Free

The Brightfields Academy is intended for public and other non-profit site owners in EPA Regions 5, 6, 7, and 8. Tribal participants from across all 10 EPA Regions are welcome to attend. Prior knowledge or having specific sites in mind for development are beneficial but not required.

We hope you will join us on September 12, 2024 for the Introduction to Brownfields workshop by registering here. If you are unable to make the first workshop, but are interested in the others, please still follow the registration link to receive information about the other workshops.

Toolbox

The Brownfields Inventory Tool, or BiT, is part of KSU TAB’s suite of E-Tools and helps communities develop, prioritize, and maintain their comprehensive brownfields site inventories and assists with brownfields program management. BiT was designed for users working under an EPA cooperative agreement requiring submittals through the Assessment Cleanup and Redevelopment Exchange System (ACRES). However, anyone establishing a site inventory database or consolidating environmental administration information will find BiT helpful. This free and user-friendly tool includes helpful resources and instructions, easy data entry and document uploads, ability to import and export date for individual or multiple sites, a mapping feature that displays sites and sample locations, allows for collaboration among multiple users, interfaces with ACRES to streamline quarterly reporting, and is password-protected to prevent unauthorized access.

BiT is available through our online platform or through the BiT Mobile App, available from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store. BiT Mobile allows users to access and update site data while working in the field, even when out of range of cell service or Wi-Fi. Modify existing information, create new sites, add a new program, take photos or generate GPS coordinates — all on the go. Then simply sync with the online tool once you have internet access.

With the annual EPA Brownfields competitive grant competition just around the corner, now is a great time to get started with BiT to build your inventory of priority brownfields sites. For instructions on how to get started, click here, or contact Maggie Belanger or Cynthia Annett for further assistance.
