Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Every October, KWRCC holds the annual Prayer Vigil to remember those Alaskans who lost their lives to domestic and sexual violence. Every year, as we prepare for this event and read the names and stories of these victims, we are reminded of the absolute necessity of the work we do at KWRCC to stop and prevent this violence. Every year, we lose Alaskan men, women, and children to domestic and sexual violence, and 70% of women in Alaska are survivors of physical, sexual, or emotional abuse from an intimate partner.

No matter how hard we try, however, KWRCC cannot change save these lives or these numbers without your help. Please take some time during Domestic Violence Awareness Month to honor those we have lost and those who have survived by considering how you can get involved. Maybe you can share your time or resources with KWRCC. Maybe you can learn how to start a conversation about abusive relationships with someone you are worried about. Maybe you can share your story with someone who needs to hear it. Maybe you can help strengthen the systems and resources in our community that make it possible for victims to find safety and rebuild their lives.

No one has to do everything, but we all have to do something. Together we can make Kodiak a safer community.

Suicide Awareness Prevention and Remembrance Walk 2024

On Saturday, September 14th KANA, KWRCC, Public Health, the US Coast Guard, and the people of Kodiak gathered to walk in honor of those who have lost their lives to suicide. We hope to support the grieving and to come together as a community to reduce the stigma surrounding this issue so that tragedies might be prevented in the future.

According to the CDC, Alaska had the 2nd highest suicide rate in the country in 2022 and is consistently double the national rate. Many factors can contribute to this number; isolated communities, historical trauma, poverty rates, lack of local and easily accessible resources, etc.

By openly discussing suicide and providing resources, we can promote healing and hope within our community. No one needs to walk alone, and the 100 people who gathered for this walk show how our community is ready to support each other. Thank you Kodiak for supporting this event!

Recognizing the Signs of

Domestic Abuse

from un.org

Domestic abuse, also called "domestic violence" or "intimate partner violence", can be defined as a pattern of behavior in any relationship that is used to gain or maintain power and control over an intimate partner. Abuse is physical, sexual, emotional, economic or psychological actions or threats of actions that influence another person.

This includes any behaviors that frighten, intimidate, terrorize, manipulate, hurt, humiliate, blame, injure, or wound someone. Domestic abuse can happen to anyone of any race, age, sexual orientation, religion, or gender. It can occur within a range of relationships including couples who are married, living together or dating. Domestic violence affects people of all socioeconomic backgrounds and education levels.

Anyone can be a victim of domestic violence, regardless of age, race, gender, sexual orientation, faith or class

Does your partner…

  • Embarrass or make fun of you in front of your friends or family?
  • Put down your accomplishments?
  • Make you feel like you are unable to make decisions?
  • Use intimidation or threats to gain compliance?
  • Tell you that you are nothing without them?
  • Treat you roughly—grab, push, pinch, shove or hit you?
  • Call you several times a night or show up to make sure you are where you said you would be?
  • Use drugs or alcohol as an excuse for saying hurtful things or abusing you?
  • Blame you for how they feel or act?
  • Pressure you sexually for things you aren’t ready for?
  • Make you feel like there is “no way out” of the relationship?
  • Prevent you from doing things you want – like spending time with friends or family?
  • Try to keep you from leaving after a fight or leave you somewhere after a fight to “teach you a lesson”?

Do you...

  • Sometimes feel scared of how your partner may behave?
  • Constantly make excuses to other people for your partner’s behaviour?
  • Believe that you can help your partner change if only you changed something about yourself?
  • Try not to do anything that would cause conflict or make your partner angry?
  • Always do what your partner wants you to do instead of what you want?
  • Stay with your partner because you are afraid of what your partner would do if you broke up?
