MARCH 2023

"The higher meditations of the Kalachakra tradition can be practiced only by a select few. But because of past and future events, and in order to establish a strong karmic relationship with Kalachakra in the minds of the people, there is now a tradition of giving the initiation to large public gatherings.” ~ 14th Dalai Lama

This month’s newsletter features the Kalachakra Heruka monogram. This symbol represents the essence of the Kalachakra tantra, the highest level tantric teachings. The teachings are complete explanation and guide to experiencing the true essence of our non-dual inner and outer worlds; of mind and matter.

The Kalachakra Heruka Monagram, represents the essence of the teaching of the Kalachakra tantra. The syllables: ha, ksa, ma, la, va, ra, ya, which are (somehow?) divided into ten, are known as the "ten syllables of power.” They represent the energy which transcends the relative concepts of time and space. The monogram contains the symbolism of the five elements - earth, water fire, air, space - transmuted by the principle of sunyata or emptiness. It also represents the 84,000 buddha-dharmas or teachings of enlightenment.

The Kalachakra Tantra

In Sanskrit, kala means time and chakra means wheel, so Kalachakra is defined as the ultimate wheel of time. The tradition contains teachings on cosmology, theology, philosophy, sociology, astrology, prophecy, medicine and mystical yogic practices. Study of the teachings lead to a transformation of one's body and mind into perfect Buddhahood using various yogic methods. The Kalachakra path is probably the most extensive Buddhist practice. For instance, The visualization for an advanced practitioner involves 722 figures in the mandala. The path requires extraordinary effort, dedication, pure transmission and spiritual guidance from a Kalachakra master.

According to the Kalachakra legend, King Suchandra, of the Kingdom of Shambhala, requested teachings from the Buddha that would allow him to practice the dharma without renouncing his worldly enjoyments and responsibilities. In response the Buddha gave the first Kālachakra root tantraKing Suchandra and ninety-six emissaries from Shambhala were said to have received the teachings and the Kalachakra passed directly to Shambhala, where it was held exclusively for hundreds of years. Later Shambhalian kings, Manjushrikirti and Pundarika, condensed and simplified the teachings into the "Sri Kalachakra" and commentaries, all of which remain extant today as the heart of the Kalachakra.

Kalachakra also refers to the yidam (meditational deity) used in the Kalachakra sadhana (practice). This yidam is in the heruka (male wrathful deity) category. The Kalachakra Heruka Monogram is a symbol representing the Yidam and all the teachings associated with it. During the sadhana, the yidam is visualized in the center of the mandala.

His Holiness, the Dalia Lama has given the Kalachakra initiation over thirty times to millions of individuals. A Kalachakra initiation requires months of planning and preparation and the services of hundreds of monks, lay people and volunteers. Although very few of the initiates actually go on to practice the path, His Holiness says that the reason he gives the initiation is “to plant seeds” for future lives.

The Kalachakra tantra prophesizes that a Golden Age will arise in 400 years. The Kings of Shambhala will transform our contemporary world into an exceptional world where Kalachakra practitioners reside. His Holiness the Dalai Lama has been giving Kalachakara empowerments in order to enable students to enter this exceptional world and bring about the Golden Age.

This Month's Naga Calendar

(See our website for more information about Naga Offerings and Prayer Flag Ceremonies)

The first half of March is still in the 1st Tibetan Month (Feb. 21 - March 21). During this month the Nagas listen to Dharma teachings. If we make offerings to the Nagas on the teb (good) day during this month (March 17), there will be three benefits: increased longevity, success in spiritual practice, and increased prosperity. If you make offerings on dok (bad) days during this month, the Nagas will perceive your offering as wild animals attacking them. This will cause them to react by attack you back.

The Tibetan 2nd month (March 21 to April 30) is the Naga’s memorial month. They remember everything that happens during this time, good or bad. Since their memory is very strong at this time, if you make offerings during the teb (good) days, the Nagas will always remember this and they will become your faithful servant and companion. On the other hand, if you make offerings to them on the dok days, they will perceive your offerings as being rotten and foul smelling and they will abandon you.
