Thank you, Beautification Day Volunteers

On October 22, the sun was shining while 60 student volunteers and a half-dozen dedicated parents weeded, trimmed, planted and mulched many of the garden beds on our LWHS campus. Thank you to teacher/ASB mentor Keira Merwine and ASB student organizers Sebastian Villalobos and Dion Babst for their help planning and implementing the event. Our PTSA provided tools, gloves, bulbs, compost bags, and snacks along with some awesome organization. Thanks to all who participated, it was a great morning! If you are interested in helping with ongoing projects and planning, please contact our Beautification Chair, Tere Kaulfus.

26 LWHS Entries in Reflections Art Competition
A big thank you to the students who wanted to "tell their story" in this year's National PTA Reflections Arts competition. LWHS students turned in a total of 26 entries: 18 visual arts, two photography, two literature, and four special artists. A special thank you goes to art teacher Ms. Wyatt whose work with her classes yielded 18 visual art entries. A big thank you also to special education teacher Ms. McCreary. These teachers' encouragement and support for student success in the arts is very much appreciated.  -- Reflections Chair, Pam Hay

Metro Rider Tips
Snow route safety
When snow comes to the Northwest, Metro bus routes change.  Here's what students need to know. In "snow route" conditions:
  • the best place to catch the bus is along a major arterial
  • Wait for the bus at the top or bottom of hills  and
  • wait back from the curb
  • dress warmly
  • prepare for delays
Metro Snow route Information can be found on the Metro website.

Need Help Completing the FAFSA?

LWHS sponsored a Financial Aid Night on November 2.  Our guest speaker reviewed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and spent time answering questions from the audience. If you experience difficulty when you fill out the FAFSA, we encourage you to call the financial aid offices at any of our local community colleges or universities.  They will be more than happy to help answer your questions.  Again, it is important to submit the FAFSA as soon as possible.  Colleges enforce deadlines and need your financial information as early as possible in order to give your student the best package

Seniors Applying to UW
Deadline is December 1
The application deadline for UW admission is December 1.  Students are encouraged NOT to wait until this date to submit their applications.  The site slows considerably with so many students submitting their applications.
De-stress and apply early!

College Applications

Students are responsible for providing addressed envelopes for transcripts. Test scores must be requested directly from the College Board or ACT.  Students are encouraged to submit their applications early and not wait until deadlines. Remember, December 1 is the cutoff date to request transcripts and to request the counselor to complete the Common Application School Report Form for January 1 due dates.  Directions for transcript submission are printed on the request form (available in the Counseling Center) and are also explained on the school's website. Students are reminded that the Counseling Center will be closed for winter break from 3 pm on Friday, December 16, 2016, until 7:30 am on Monday, January 4, 2017.  During this period we are unable to respond to emails or phone calls, so please advise your senior student to have his/her college application questions answered prior to the winter closure.

Check Out College Price Calculators
The U.S. government mandated that all colleges that wish to continue distributing federal grants or loans must post net price calculators (NPC's) to their websites.  By plugging in your financial numbers, you can see an approximate cost to attend a particular college.
