The LWHS PTSA is pleased to continue supporting our students in their vision for creating a comprehensive sustainability culture at LWHS. As reported in past Kang Criers, recent opportunities have allowed both students and the community to participate in an all-school transformation in time for Earth Week (week of April 17-21).
The most recent activity was a food waste audit conducted on March 16 in the LWHS Commons. Principal Bell kicked off the audit with 17 students, most from the Green Team and Honor Society, along with PTSA Sustainability Chair Stephanie Lecovin, PTSA President Tanya Knudsen, and Green Team Advisor Andrea Thody. The group weighed and measured the waste from lunch that day, sorting it into four different categories: items that could be donated/shared, items that could be composted, items that could be recycled, and finally those items to be trashed. They weighed and measured the sorted piles, which will determine how much waste from lunch could potentially be kept out of the landfill and feed people who are hungry.
The waste audit was critical to establish a baseline and determine next steps to create a new waste sorting/composting system that will include food donation, composting, and recycling. The group plans to have the new system up and running at LWHS by Earth Week in April.
For more information or to get involved, check out the PTSA Sustainability webpage or contact Stephanie Lecovin, LWHS PTSA Sustainability Chair

From the Desk of LWHS Principal Christine Bell | |
Greetings Kang Families,
For this edition of the Kang Crier I would like to share with you our support of our students during Ramadan as well as an opportunity for you to engage in learning walks with administration at LWHS.
Ramadan begins on March 22nd. This is a holy month for many of our students. To support the needs of students who need a space for prayer and fasting during the school day we will provide access to our College and Career Center during lunches each day. In the Lake Washington School District we strive to recognize and honor the cultural and religious traditions of our students. At LWHS we encourage students to represent their heritage on our walls (through posters) and in their classrooms through diverse curriculum. Education is the greatest tool in building empathy and understanding in a multicultural community. We are honored to serve all students and families.
We are also excited to welcome you to join us for Parent and Community Learning Walks. Parent and Community Learning Walks are new to LWSD but they are not new to me. I worked with staff and families in two other high schools to build a tradition of opening our practice to the community we serve. I want to encourage you to consider joining my administrative team in upcoming opportunities as well. This is a chance for you to visit classrooms with administrators to see the awesome work of our students and faculty. We observe classrooms of teachers who have invited us in and get the chance to celebrate through positive feedback. The best part is that you can get to know LWHS better and engage with our learning community. Watch for a ParentSquare message with dates/times to sign up to visit. Our teachers are ready to pilot this program.
Thank you for your ongoing support of our learning community. Go Kangs!
Christine Bell
LWHS Principal
