From the Desk of LWHS Principal Christine Bell

Dear Kang Families,

I hope you all enjoyed your spring break and that our students took some time to rest and spend time with family.

Parents who visited Coffee with Christine in late March asked me to highlight some commonly asked questions in this edition of the Kang Crier. I hope that this is useful to you.

How do I update emergency and family information in Skyward?

Log in to Skyward Family Access. When you are in your student's profile, select the tab labeled "Student info." It is located on the left side of the page. Above the box containing your student's photo and the current information you will find a button labeled "Request Changes." When you click on that button, you will be able to update your information.

Keeping your information up to date allows us to contact you in case of emergency, such as if your student has a medical emergency and is in the Health Room. You should know, when an ambulance is called for a student, we print out the demographics page to hand over to the paramedics as well.

What is the purpose of the Panorama Survey?

The Lake Washington School District asks parents, students and staff to complete a survey each year. That survey provides us with feedback on how members of our community experience our school. Data is provided to the district and to each school.

An example of a Panorama question is "How connected do you feel to the adults in your school?" Answers to questions are broken down so that staff can use the data to focus efforts on improving the environment for students. I also use this information to help me write the School Improvement Plan.

Students are surveyed in the fall, and parents and staff are surveyed in the spring. It is critical that our survey participants take the Panorama Survey seriously — it matters.

When is the Open House for 8th graders/Future Kangs?

We are excited to meet our Future Kangs. Current 8th graders and their families will be welcomed at our Open House on May 16th from 5:00 to 6:30pm. During that time families will take student-led tours of the school. At the end of that time, you can join a Coffee with Christine (soon to be "Kang Coffee Hour") in the library. While attending the Open House is not mandatory, it is an opportunity to experience the learning environment and tours will make your family feel more comfortable about the transition to high school.

Students can also look forward to orientation in August. That summer orientation will be provided by student LINK leaders. The date for August orientation is not yet established.

Finally, parent visitors are encouraged to stay in their cars when parking in the roundabout. Unattended vehicles prevent others from being able to move their vehicles. Thank you for your support in this.

I appreciate the partnership I have with our parents. Thank you to those who attended Coffee with Christine and shared these questions.

Go Kangs!
