Dear Kang Families,
I am happy to report that our first quarter has been a success. Our classes are well underway, and our students and staff are doing well overall. Last week we had our first round of Parent & Community Learning Walks. This was an opportunity for our parents to step into our classrooms to observe learning firsthand. Learning walks have been a positive way of engaging families in learning, and I am so appreciative of the support from our parents.
As we prepare for the end of the first quarter, I encourage you to check in with your student, to check Skyward, and to have your student connect directly with their teachers regarding any concerns. Our teachers are gracious in their support of students who ask for help.
It's cold and flu season. I am thankful that we can add Covid to this list of illnesses that we can cope with. Any time your student is not feeling well they should stay home. A parent recently asked me how our health room visits compare to this time last year. Overall, we are down slightly. It seems like less students are sick. If they are, it's likely that they are staying home rather than coming to school only to visit the health room. We are here to care for all of our students, and our Health Room Office Professional Haley is a wonderful support. Any student can ask to come to the health room at any time.
While we are on the topic of illness, I have an ask for you. Please notify the attendance office if you need to pick your student up for an appointment during the school day. We need to have that point of contact prior to releasing your student. This helps us keep track of who is and is not on our campus. Sometimes we get a student who receives a text asking them to leave for an appointment. Without contact from a parent we cannot release that student.
The next support I need from parents is in regard to Roo Time. Students have access to their teachers during Homeroom/Roo Time each week. The purpose of this time is to provide intervention and enrichment. It is not optional. Students should not be leaving campus during this time. Thank you for your support in this.

New College and Career Specialist Introduction!
Alex Clark-McGlenn is our new College and Career Specialist. Last year, Alex was a substitute teacher at our school, and he liked it so much he decided to find a more permanent niche. Alex can be found tabling with career and college information during school lunches in the Commons. He’s also been helping students with college essays by appointment. Students can make a writing tutoring appointment with Alex at the College and Career Center (room 180). He is happy to help any writer, with any writing, at any stage of the writing process.
Kirkland Rotary Club Student of the Month Winners
Congratulations to our Kirkland Rotary Club Students of the Month. Andy Alkin, Erisa Baba, Rachel Chu, Brooke Lewis, Reese Roberts, Raahina Sheik Syed Ali, and Subhasheni Venkatesh were all recipients of the Kirkland Rotary Club Student of the Month Award. Congratulations everyone!
University of Washington Application Deadline: November 15th
Just a reminder that the University of Washington Application Deadline is fast approaching. The last day to submit an application is Wednesday, November 15th.

Call for Volunteer Photographers! | |

LWHS PTSA is looking for adults to provide brief senior portrait sessions for students in need.
We know many parents in our community are skilled amateur photographers: if that describes you, would you be willing to volunteer your time and talent to help seniors gain access to this tradition? Some seniors might not be able to afford portrait sessions, and your help could make a difference in their lives.
- Our goal is to give these seniors a portrait that they would be able to use for the school yearbook...and also to give them a keepsake from this very exciting milestone year!
- The deadline for yearbook submissions is January 5th, 2024, so all portrait sessions would need to be completed before the December winter break.
- We want to emphasize that you don't need to be a professional photographer: we're just looking for folks who are good with a camera.

These are travel opportunities tailored for LWHS students, but are not sponsored by the school or district nor by LWHS PTSA.

The High School Ski Bus Program is Coming to LWHS! | |
Are you ready for an adventure-filled winter season? Look no further, as we bring exciting news your way! The High School Ski Bus program is coming to LWHS this year, so gear up for an incredible journey on the slopes. Whether you're an experienced skier or a complete novice, this program offers something for everyone.
What is the High School Ski Bus Program?
The High School Ski Bus Program is brought to you by Webbski Ski and Snowboard School. This afterschool program is a fantastic opportunity for students to embrace the joys of our NW winter by experiencing the thrill of skiing and snowboarding, creating lifelong memories, and building camaraderie with fellow students. Here are the details:

The Ski Bus & Lesson Program is run by Webbski Ski and Snowboard School

Registration Forms specific to LWHS students can be found in the LWHS front office

Registration Deadline: December 13th or as soon as the bus fills up

Dates: Starts Wednesday, January 3rd, 2024, and runs for 5 consecutive weeks

Lessons (optional): Webbski offers ski and snowboard lessons. The lessons are 75 minutes and then students can free-ski/snowboard or eat, etc. until it is time to leave

The Cost: $436 for lessons and transportation OR $250 for just transportation. Lift tickets and gear rental are not included

Time and Date: The bus picks up in front of LWHS on Wednesdays after the 1:25pm release. Equipment and kids are loaded at that time. The bus leaves at 1:40pm and drives directly to Summit Central at Snoqualmie and returns ~8:30pm.

From Youth Eastside Services (YES) Prevention Intervention Counseling Corner | |

The 2023 Red Ribbon Week just ended where communities across the country take a stand against drugs and violence and have promoted this through RRW for over 30 years now. This year’s theme has been “Be kind to your mind, live drug free!” Students all over the nation including those in LWSD are taking the pledge to stay safe, healthy and live drug/alcohol free.
Did You Know? When parents talk to their teens regularly about drugs/alcohol, they are 42% less likely to use substances than those who don’t; yet only a quarter of these teens report having these conversations.

LWHS DECA - Volunteers Needed Wednesday, January 10th | |

DECA, an internationally recognized club focused on business and marketing, is the largest club at LWHS. In order to compete in our Area 3 competition on January 10, 2024, we need volunteers to act as organizers, timekeepers, and judges. Area competition is the first level of competition that students go through. LWHS will compete against other LWSD schools as well as Northshore and Mercer Island School Districts.
LWHS DECA is required to bring around 50 volunteers in order to run the events that are assigned to us and for our students to be able to compete in this first level of competition. No prior business or marketing experience is necessary!
What: LWHS DECA needs volunteers for our Area 3 competition
Date: Wednesday January 10th, 2024
Time: 7:30am - 2:30pm
Where: Meydenbauer Convention Center - Bellevue, WA
Why: Support and grow the next generation of professionals in the areas of marketing, management, finance, hospitality, and entrepreneurship.

Poetry Slam! Tuesday, November 14th | |

All students are welcome to compete! Encourage your child to participate!
There will be two sections:
- Open Mic where you can share ONE poem of your choice (no longer than three minutes), and
- The competition / Poetry Slam, in which you bring THREE poems (no longer than three minutes each) with which to compete in three possible rounds.
