Welcome Messages

A Note from PTSA President, Colleen Rutherford

Welcome Kangs!

September is right around the corner and, while I am not ready to give up on my geraniums and long summer nights, I know fall is coming. This fall marks a new beginning for our family as our oldest begins his senior year. It will be a year of his "lasts": last first day of school, last homecoming, last football game, last swim meet, and so on. As I begin to compose this message, he is finishing his senior pictures. Another milestone checked off on a long list of to-dos.

One of the things I enjoyed the most about the last 11 years is the strong community of which we are so lucky to be a part. A community that has embodied a spirit of, "You Belong Here!" before it became a school motto. And a strong part of that community includes the LWHS PTSA.

The mission of the PTSA is threefold:

  • Be a strong advocate for the education and well-being of all children
  • Be a relevant resource for families, schools, and communities
  • Be a powerful voice for children.

As a community, PTSA advocates for the rights of our students to belong and thrive through education and resources, and provides a voice for the issues that matter most. As your returning PTSA president, I welcome each of you (parents, staff, family, and community members) to be a part of this journey from freshman through senior year. Each child's journey should look different, take different turns, and trailblaze unique ideas and goals. As president of the LWHS PTSA, I strongly emphasize that, "You Belong Here" too! Please join us at our general membership meetings, our coffee talks with Principal Dr. Bell, during parent learning walks or simply send me a note to make sure that the issues that matter most to you are presented and listened to and discussed and actioned.

I look forward to meeting new and returning families this fall. And while I begin the process of saying "good-bye" to my oldest student, I am still excited and humbled to have one more blazing her own path to senior year! I look forward to meeting you and helping your student(s), no matter where they fall in grades 9 to 12.

Warmly,

Colleen Rutherford

LWHS PTSA President

Dear Kang Families,

Welcome to the 2024-25 school year!

This year we focus on "Opening Doors." This means that in everything we do we will look to increase accessibility and open up new possibilities. You will see this theme, along with the pursuit of excellence, highlighted throughout the year.

Speaking of open doors, on Wednesday, September 18th we will host our annual Curriculum Night/Open House. Please watch for more details and add a "save the date" to your calendar for that evening. Curriculum Night is a chance to meet teachers, see the inside of our beautiful buildings, and pick up some awesome Kang gear.

When our students have their pictures taken, they will receive a student ID and lanyard. Once they pay for ASB, they can use their card to get into games and events. We ask that students have their identification at all times while at school.

Our campus is secure. There is only one accessible entrance and during the day our visitors have to be buzzed in. We have been working on training our students to not let their peers in through external exits. Please help reinforce the importance of this safety practice. In the mornings and at lunch we try to have personnel hold the door to the North Wing, and in the morning we hold the east gate open (near the tennis courts) for students who arrive to campus on foot.

School policies involving cell phones have been in the news lately. In the Lake Washington School District our expectation is that students have their phones off and away during learning time. At Lake Washington High School we provide teachers with cell phone "pouches" and other cell phone holders. Teachers will often require that students leave their phone in the holder during tests and during instruction. They may also need to leave it while they go to the bathroom. In most classrooms, our students can access their phones during "brain breaks" and they always have access during lunch and passing periods.

Our cell phone policy involves progressive measures to support students in positive cell phone use. First, they are issued a warning. Then, a teacher may ask to have the phone until the end of the period. Next, the phone is sent to the office and an administrator needs to connect with the student at the end of the day before returning the phone. This step is documented in the student's discipline file. If this doesn't work, the parent may be asked to pick up the phone and/or the student may be put on a cell phone plan, meaning that they have to turn their phone in when they arrive each morning. Our goal is to have students use their phones responsibly so that these measures do not need to be in place.

You will have received several messages from the district regarding changes to student logins. This summer, student emails and usernames were switched from the s-firstinitiallastname format to their student number. Students can access in-person tech support in the library during the school year.

Please be patient with our counseling team. This year we have eight counselors and four of them are brand new to us! Registering new students happens at the same time as our counseling team is working on schedule changes, graduation requirement audits and class balancing. This is careful, time-consuming work. We appreciate your support.

Safety is our first priority. As students make more frequent use of electric bicycles, I want to be sure that they are adhering to traffic rules, obeying the speed limit, wearing helmets and not riding them on district athletic fields. Poor bicycle behavior has become common, and it will continue to be a problem until we educate our teens and reinforce our expectations.

You are welcome at LW and I look forward to seeing you all soon. Thank you for your ongoing support of our learning community. Go Kangs!

PTSA Donation & Volunteer Requests

Volunteer with College Application Workshop!

LWHS PTSA's award-winning College Application Workshop program provides seniors with college application essay and personal statement support. We also steer students in the right direction for any additional help they may need. This is a great way to connect with students and help them achieve their goals.

Volunteers are needed for Fall 2024 school year as we continue this successful program in virtual and in-person mode. Is this the right program for you? Many volunteers are parents of current or past students, or are from the broader community, and all have strong writing skills. Most importantly, everyone is willing to share their time, a precious commodity that benefits students. We ask for a once a week, 2 to 3 hour commitment for the months of October and November.

Training is provided in September, date TBD. Contact us for more information or to volunteer.

Free Practice SAT / ACT Tests - Register by Sept 18th

LWHS PTSA is partnering with Princeton Review to give students the opportunity to take the SAT or ACT just “for practice” at no cost. Students can take this practice test any number of times and the scores from these do not go on their record.

Students take the tests online at a date and time that is convenient, within the time window below:

Note: If your student has taken an earlier practice test, they can take it again. However, please note that the set of questions will be the same.

Questions? Contact Julie Jiang, LWHS PTSA SAT/ACT Practice Test Chair.

Reflections 2024-2025: Accepting Imperfection

Reflections is a National PTA arts recognition program that helps students explore their own thoughts, feelings and ideas, develop artistic literacy, increase confidence, and find a love for learning that will help them become more successful not only in school, but in life.

The theme of the Reflections program for 2024-2025 is “Accepting Imperfection”.

Students have the whole summer break to think about how to work on this Reflections art project. The due date for 2024-2025 will be around mid-November.

If your student is interested in participating in this art program, please review:

Seniors

Seniors: The Year Ahead

Every year is a busy year at LWHS, but Senior Year is filled with lots of extra events and celebrations. LWHS PTSA has a Senior Year webpage describing all of these various events to help both parents and students prepare. It's useful for Junior parents too, as a few tasks are ideally started at the end of Junior year.

This webpage will be updated throughout the year as dates firm up, but for now, click here for details.
