School

From the Desk of LWHS Principal, Dr. Christine Bell

Dear Kang Families,

LW is preparing to welcome our newest students during Future Freshman Night on Thursday, February 6th and the following week we will also host parents for learning walks. Now that our second semester has begun, our sights are set on spring and the celebrations it brings.

As we begin registration for the 2025-26 school year, we want to partner with parents in guiding students toward a well-rounded and sustainable high school experience. With the transition from a seven-period to a six-period day, this is an opportunity to take a step back and consider the high school journey holistically.

We know our students are incredibly driven. Many challenge themselves with advanced coursework while also balancing extracurricular activities, part-time jobs, community service, and personal commitments. However, we often see students struggling to manage it all. At semester, a significant number request schedule changes, hoping to drop advanced courses due to stress or concerns about grades.

In college, students do not typically take more than four or five classes at a time. It is neither necessary nor beneficial for high school students to overload their schedules with the maximum number of advanced courses available. Academic rigor is important, but so is maintaining a balanced, healthy lifestyle. High levels of anxiety and burnout are often the result of sleep deprivation, poor nutrition, and a lack of physical activity—factors we see more and more often in our students.

During registration, counselors will meet one-on-one with each student to ensure their course selections align with graduation requirements while also taking into account their workload. However, we need your help as parents to reinforce this message at home. Please encourage your student to be ambitious but also realistic, prioritizing both academic success and well-being.

Our goal is to prepare students not just for college admission, but for long-term success. Balance is key, and together, we can help our students thrive.

Thank you for your partnership and support!

Reminder: College & Career Center Events

ASVAB: February 10th, 8:30am to 10:30am in the College & Career Center

The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) is being offered on February 10th at 8:30am. The ASVAB provides a fantastic opportunity for students to explore their strengths and interests. Beyond assessing aptitude, the ASVAB connects students with career exploration tools that help identify pathways aligned with their skills and passions. This test is a valuable resource for future planning.

Spring College Fair: April 22nd, 5:00pm to 7:00pm in the Gym

The College and Career Center will host its annual Spring College Fair on April 22nd. This is an excellent opportunity for LWHS students, especially juniors, to explore their future educational options. This event allows students to meet representatives from a wide range of colleges and universities, learn about admissions requirements, campus life, academic programs, and ask personalized questions to find the best fit for their goals. It's a chance to build connections with admissions representatives and gather resources to make informed decisions about your college journey. Stay tuned for more information about breakout sessions that will be offered as well.

PTSA

Reminders: PTSA Notes and Volunteer Opportunities

Recommendation: Parent and Community Learning Walks

PTSA is not involved with the Parent and Community Learning Walks hosted by the school administration, but highly recommends parents and members of our community take full advantage of them. Our children spend an enormous part of their mid-teen years at LWHS, and these Learning Walks allow you to get a credible view into this aspect of their life during regular school hours. In addition, you will get dedicated time with our school administrators and have ample opportunity to discuss the workings and happenings at our school.

Sign up now for the Tuesday, February 11th session, or book off your calendars for the upcoming, Thursday, April 25th session.

Emergency Preparation Classroom Backpack Restocking

Wednesday, Feb 5th at 2:00pm, Emergency Preparation will be restocking classroom backpacks at LWHS and could use additional volunteers.

Email eprep@lwhsptsa.org if you can help.
