Finally, our kangaroos and cows meet!
Scooter, our 10-month old female kangaroo, has been out and about visiting Hy-Vee grocery stores in the Cedar Valley and interacting with tour visitors. Herd manager and kangaroo caregiver Blake Hansen decided to finally introduce the cows to the kangaroo.
Although they live in close proximity on our farm, the kangaroos and cows have never really been visible to each other, so the cows are certainly curious about this strange animal near their pen. Scooter is used to being the center of attention, so she wasn't as interested in the cows as they appeared to be with her.
The meeting went well. Later, Blake observed the cows trying out their hopping skills.

We had three winners in our July CA$H COW contest. Congrats to Kelli Headington and Beau Bridges of Waterloo, and Jane Gadow of Cedar Falls, who each found a $5 jug. Back-to-school brain boosters

Sweet corn arriving in August from C.F. farmer
|
Deep Root Acres owner Blake Carlson of Cedar Falls will have sweet corn available at Hansen's Dairy stores in August.
Carlson wants to move away from commonly grown GMO soy and field corn. He likes the alternative of a polyculture system, which uses several different types of plants to keep the soil packed with nutrients year-round.
In order to create a nutrient dense plant, Carlson uses a mulch base for his crops to grow in. Over time, the mulch decays into its base nutrients.
"When you look at an undisturbed forest, God did it right. I want to mimic that in the way I farm," explained Carlson.
He does not use any genetically modified plants, nor does he spray harsh chemicals on his produce at any stage.
At present, Carlson is growing sweet potatoes, flowers and berries. He specializes in sweet corn. This fall Carlson will also be planting 4-5 acres of nut trees. For more information, visit his

The August Customer of the Month is
Janell Slight of Cedar Falls.
Janell started purchasing Hansen's milk many years ago at Fareway in Cedar Falls. Once the Hansen's Dairy stores opened in Waterloo and Cedar Falls, she began shopping there.
"I love that your milk doesn't have the 'plastic container' taste that so many brands do," Janell said.
She also enjoys sampling the Wisconsin cheeses and other local foods at the Waterloo store's Festival of Cheese each December.
"The fact that you allow many local producers to sell their products in your store is a huge attraction for me," she says.

Our current Cow of the Month will celebrate her 5th birthday in August.
Apollo will also share her birth month with her fourth baby, as she is due to calve on Aug. 10.
Apollo is a fantastic cow to have in the barn. She is trouble-free and has highly desirable dairy traits. She has passed down those traits to the three heifers she's already given birth to, so hopefully there is another girl on the way here in August!

Cooking with Hansen's
|
This souped-up version of macaroni and cheese uses lots of dairy products for an easy, filling meal on those busy school nights. Make sure to use the coupon this month on Bongard's American slices - those slices make the best macaroni and cheese! Starred items can be purchased at Hansen's Dairy stores.
Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 10 minutes
Serves: 4
INGREDIENTS
- 2 cups water
- 1 cup small elbow macaroni
- 2 cups Hansen's milk*
- 6 ounces Bongard's American cheese slices*
- 2 Tbsp Hansen's butter*
- ½ cup peas
- 2 Tbsp cooked, crumbled bacon*
DIRECTIONS
Bring water to a boil; add macaroni. Reduce heat to simmer. Cook, stirring often, until tender, about 8 minutes. Do not drain. Add milk and heat until almost boiling. Add cheese and butter, then stir until melted. Add peas and bacon and heat through.
