Greetings!
How's Your Year Going?
I wouldn't say I'm obsessed with the "numbers" inside my business, but I do keep a close eye on them.
One of my fundamental beliefs is that you get better at whatever you put your focus on. Even without a specific plan, you'll get better at finances, technology, or customer service by simply bringing it into your consciousness.
That's one reason why I at least glance at my numbers every day. Many people do this once a week. Some people I've met never look at their numbers.
The funny thing about reviewing your numbers is that it takes a while to understand what you're looking at, if you don't do it often. But if you do it everyday, then it takes seconds. Or maybe a minute.
Well, we're not more than 1/3 of the way through the year and there's some noticeable inflation in the mix. So, if you're not used to tracking your numbers, this might be a good time to start.
If nothing else, you should start building a plan for the second half of the year.

How is your cash flow? Remember: When times get tough, cash tends to disappear. Is cash flowing into and out of your business about the same each month?
And maybe more importantly, do you have enough cash available in case cash flow slows?
It's also a good time to talk to your clients. How does their year look? Will they have cash problems? Will they need to make cuts? You can speculate, but you'll probably be wrong. One of the other absolutely unbreakable rules is: Don't have both sides of the conversation. If you want to know how your clients are doing, ASK.
Some companies (perhaps yours, perhaps your clients) have seasonal cash flow. How will this affect the rest of 2022 for you?
May is a great month to look at your monthly numbers. You've got some idea how close it is to last year. And if there's trouble ahead, it is probably visible by now. You might not have a "plan" per se, but now's a good time to determine whether you need to plan for changes in the second half of the year.
If there's trouble brewing, the worst thing you can do it to ignore it. If you need to make cuts in your business, or other important changes, it's best to do them from a deliberate perspective rather than having to suddenly make cuts.
If you have a monthly spreadsheet for the year (which I recommend), it's not a good idea to change projections all the time. But every three or four months, it does make sense to tweak those projections based on the realistic environment your business is in.
And the truth is: Even if it's all good news, doing a business self-tune-up two or three times a year is always a good idea.
Just a few thoughts on a sunny day in California.

Strategy Folder
On a mostly unrelated note, do you have a "strategy" folder? In my file storage, I have an operations folder to hold additional folders such as finance, personnel, etc. And one of those sub-folders is called Strategy.
That's where I throw text files of ideas, pictures that inspire me, and Excel spreadsheets of possible new adventures. It's basically a holding place for the old adage - working ON my business.
The very act of occasionally opening this folder and browsing the contents will jump-start your brain. To see, how, read my 2018 blog posts on the RAS or Reticular Activating System.
The best part: There are no instructions. Create the folder. Throw ideas in there. And then browse through it once in a while. Your brain will do the rest.
