Karla was born and raised in Windsor. She was baptized Oct. 13, 1933, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Windsor, though her childhood church years were spent at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Greeley, where she attended Sunday School, was confirmed in 1948, and began playing the organ for services at age 14. In 1950, her family began attending Bethel Lutheran Church in Windsor, where she also served as organist and choir director from time to time. She attended Windsor schools, graduating with the great class of 1951.

For three years, she taught second grade at Tozer Primary School. She then moved to teaching elementary music at Tozer, Mountain View and Skyview elementary schools for 13 years.
She was a member of the original board of directors of the Windsor Historical Society (or "Hysterical Society," as Ted called it), serving twice as president. She was also active in Windsor Downtown Development.
In 1977, she became musical director at St. Albans Episcopal Church in Windsor, a position she held for more than 25 years. In 2006, they became members of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Fort Collins, where she enjoyed singing in the choir.
