Katsina First Lady, Hajiya Fatima Ibrahim Shema to KEYNOTE
OPENING of WETATi International Women's Conference.
First Lady of Katsina State, Nigeria, Hajiya Fatima Ibrahim Shema will participate in the upcoming WETATi International Women's Conference. She will be the keynote speaker for the official opening of the conference. The conference is scheduled for March 29-30 in Linthicum, MD.
A development activist, Hajiya Shema runs an NGO called SERVICE TO HUMANITY FOUNDATION. The foundation has numerous projects, including HIV/aids, maternal and child care, helping orphans and vulnerable children, women empowerment projects and sickle cell disorder. The foundation commenced sickle service in 2008 with forty registered patients and today it has ten thousand patients. It has set up clinics in different parts of the state for reliable diagnosis of sickle cell. The foundation provides counseling to individuals and families affected. UNICEF supports the foundation with nutrition supplements and capacity development.
Katsina State is in the northern part of Nigeria, with a population of about four million. The state is predominantly inhabited by the Hausa/Fulani ethnic group and Hausa is the predominant language. Sharia is valid in the entire state. However, the Redeemed Christian Church of God and the Roman Catholic Church are present in the state. The state has large deposits of Kaolin and asbestos and other minerals needed for good industrial take off. Institutions of higher education in Katsina State, include Umaru Yar Adua University and Katsina State University.
