Helping students like Kaymarie

We continue to be inspired by Kaymarie Daniel, a student we've helped in the past through the scholarship program, but also indirectly through other Bequia initiatives. Her story is one that really demonstrates the power of talent and ambition, things that she has in spades. But it also demonstrates the power of community.

She's now studying Fashion Design at Miami Dade College, and otherwise making a name for herself in that world, though it's a journey that began very simply. She says that "I first learned to sew using skills passed down from my grandmother, who taught me fundamentals and gave me my first sewing machine."

That interest grew, as did her skills. In time she founded a handmade swimsuit brand called MarieKays. She also volunteered with the Hub Collective, training models, providing makeup lessons, and overseeing the annual fashion show.

It was a about fashion, but also about possibility. "Understanding and knowing firsthand the challenges and struggles that exist as a young woman and creative in St Vincent and the Grenadines," says Kaymarie Daniel, "it is ingrained in me to continue uplifting and empowering those around me."

"I wanted to be a voice for young aspiring designers within my country but especially on my island, Bequia," she says. "I wanted to show others that we set our own paths and we should be allowed to do what makes us happy."

And she has, in so many ways. People who have followed her on social media will see that she's blazing a path for herself, having recently been featured in a prominent runway show.

She's certainly off to see the world, but when interviewed, she always thinks of home. "If you’ve never heard about Bequia, please google it," she told a recent interviewer. "You’d thank me later. It is so beautiful. The beaches are clean and so clear. We must go diving or snorkelling with Ron at Dive adventures. If you’ve never swam between schools of fishes, this is the place for you. Then we’re going to Macs pizzeria. The pizza there is to die for, it’s so good!"

We can't express how proud we are to have helped Kaymarie in her journey, this through scholarships, but also indirectly through supporting programs like the Hub Collective, the Junior Sailing Academy of Bequia. Her story is an example of why we do what we do to help young people find mentorship for themselves and, in time, provide mentorship and examples for others.
