3 Tips for Managing Test-Taking Anxiety
1. Breathe deeply.

When you feel your heart racing or your mind spinning, take deep breaths. Deep breathing shuts down your "fight or flight" stress response and helps improve your focus and attention. Try "7/11" breathing (breathe in for 7 counts, breathe out for 11 counts) or watch a guided meditation video on YouTube .

2. Keep a growth mindset.

Remember that every exam, no matter the grade, is an opportunity to learn. Think about the times you haven't done as well as you had hoped on a test or assignment. What have you learned from those experiences? How can you take those lessons and use them to prepare for your next challenge? Be proud of your progress, and avoid the trap of aiming for perfection.

3. Don't be afraid to get help.

Many students find it beneficial to talk to someone when they're feeling anxious or overwhelmed. You can strategize with your advisor or mentor, or speak with a counselor at the Brandeis Counseling Center .
