As you prepare your holiday meals, the Marina Coast Water District reminds you to avoid creating a solid waste “fatberg” and other sewer clogs by keeping fats, oils and grease (FOG) out of your drain.
Move FOG "from the pan to the can.
Instead of pouring grease down the kitchen sink, pour cooled cooking oil and grease from foods into a metal container, let it finish cooling, then place it in the trash. Before you wash pots, pans, and dishes, wipe away the FOG, then dispose of FOG-laden paper towels.
Dish soaps and hot water are only temporary solutions. FOG will congeal again when the water cools and the soap separates from the grease. FOG-laden wastewater clogs pipes and creates sewer blockages and backups.
Dispose of FOG properly to avoid a fatberg in your drain.
