World Ocean Day June 8

TODAY, on WORLD OCEAN DAY, take a minute to appreciate the awesome Atlantic, the rivers around us that flow into it, and all the ways they're important. Click HERE for some ways to help keep our beautiful coastal waters clean and healthy.

Abandoned Buildings Program UPDATE

Keep McIntosh Beautiful's Abandoned Buildings Program provides an affordable way for owners to remove dilapidated, abandoned houses and mobile homes in McIntosh County. When you see this sign, you'll know we're at work. The goals of the program are to improve the appearance of our community, make it safer and healthier by removing blighted and derelict structures, and to make land available for a good use.

By the end of June we expect to have completed 32 projects since the program began in 2016, at a total cost to KMB of only $19,270 for all projects. Our (your) dollars have gone a long way! We thank our ABP community partners and those who support the ABP with your membership, donations and attendance at fundraising events. It's a win for our community that benefits everyone. Before and After photos of two recent projects are below.

New Recycling/Waste Stations in Darien

Keep McIntosh Beautiful recently placed five recycling/waste stations in locations around Darien - Ida Hilton Public Library, the Darien-McIntosh Chamber of Commerce, McIntosh County Academy, Fort King George and the McIntosh County Extension Office (photo at left with 4-H Agent Lauryn Gilmer). The stations, customized for each location, are a much appreciated gift to our community from Cox Enterprises of Atlanta.

Adopt A Highway

A big thanks to all our Adopt A Highway/park/spot volunteers in Darien and throughout the county. There are still plenty of miles and places needing some TLC. Please consider making this a part of the way you help keep our community clean and green. Click the link below for more information and an application.

2023 EVENTS

Annual Oyster Roast-BBQ Fundraiser Feb. 11

It was a rainy night in Georgia, but nothing comes between people and their oysters around here - especially for a good cause! Despite the weather, KMB's biggest fundraiser was a huge success. Thanks to our sponsors, Silent Auction and other contributors and all who supported KMB with your attendance. It was a super fun night! (Bob Claxton photo). For more photos click HERE.

Great American Cleanup Litter Pickups March 4

25 volunteers collected 75 bags (approx.1,500 pounds) of litter and assorted debris during litter pickups along Shellman Bluff Road and Smith Roads. The events were part of the Great American Cleanup, sponsored by Keep America Beautiful, which also provided KMB with free trash bags, grabbers and gloves. Thanks again to all who came out.

Tree Planting at McIntosh County Academy Celebrates Arbor Days

To celebrate Georgia Arbor Day (Feb 17) and National Arbor Day (April 28), Keep McIntosh Beautiful partnered with the McIntosh County 4-H Club and McIntosh County Academy FFA students to plant three trees at the high school campus on March 21. The students will take on stewardship of the trees over the next 2 years to ensure they survive and develop healthy root systems.

Coastal Earth Day Event

The Coastal Earth Day 2023 Event April 22, organized by Georgia Public Service Commissioner Tim Echols and Darien resident Timothy Karsten, was a day of learning and service that included live-streamed interviews (KMB President Barbara Hawthorne is pictured above), a cleanup of the Upper Mill Cemetery, and the donation and planting by Coastal Electric Coop of 8 large live oak trees as phase one of the restoration of Oglethorpe Square.
