What is one thing home improvement craftspeople, airplane mechanics and ENT surgeons have in common? To get respective jobs done precisely, they need the right tools. By analogy, a hearing care professional’s tool kit must be the right fit for for high tech diagnostics and Educational Curation, particularly on how hearing loss relates to cognitive decline. Keep in mind, why is our comorbidity awareness theme Did You Know? Because not enough people do, including consumers, other healthcare providers and decision makers in senior living communities.

As emphasized last week:
“From a public health viewpoint, we know Cognitive Decline’s complex relationship to hearing loss is difficult to explain and understand. Healthcare consumers require trustworthy information to make well-informed decisions which, in the real world, is easier said than done. From lacking awareness to scare tactics, obstacles are numerous.”
Those keen to spread the word about cognitive health will benefit from studying Jonah Berger’s brilliant book, Contagious, originally featured (for those who are counting…) 117 weeks ago.
With respect to a conceptual tool kit, Berger states, “Just as people use money to buy products and services, they use social currency to achieve desired impressions among their families, friends and colleagues. So to get people talking, companies and organizations need to mint social currency. Give people a way to make them look good while promoting their products and services along the way.”
Further:
“As talented researchers methodically create evidence-based insights, much of which is publicly available, hearing care professionals who aspire to be whole-person care leaders must exhibit subject matter expertise as educational curators who nurture and mint comorbidity-related social currency.

“We should enthusiastically exchange educationally targeted social currency with more of our patients, local healthcare providers, senior living community residents and many other quality of life advocates.”
Cognitive Decline-concentrated social currency should be organically minted and spread in three areas.
