NRMN Master Facilitators Work to Finalize Projects
Thirty NRMN Master Facilitators convened in Madison, WI, to complete and finalize the mentorship programs we have developed over the past five years. As we approach the completion of NRMN Phase I next month, the Master Facilitator team developed plans to sustain the momentum and community surrounding our 
mentorship curriculums.

Dr. Green on his research and awarded grant:

"My research focus investigates the molecular mechanisms involved in the regulation of pulmonary artery smooth muscle proliferation and pulmonary hypertension pathogenesis. The long-term goal of this research project is to determine how alterations in the regulation of mitophagy impacts PASMC proliferation in PH pathobiology. The grant I applied for was a VA Merit Review Award. This is a veteran's health administration Federal grant."

Two NRMN Leaders Receive ACTS Distinguished Educator Award for Research Mentor Training Programs

NRMN Leadership were  recently honored with a prestigious award from the
  Association of Clinical and Translational Science (ACTS) .  Christine Sorkness , PharmD, RPh, Distinguished Professor of Pharmacy and Medicine, and  Christine Pfund , PhD, Senior Scientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Education and director of the  Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experience in Research (CIMER) , were honored in March at the 2019 ACTS Annual Meeting with a Distinguished Educator Award for their decades long partnership to improve research mentor training programs for scholars in the biomedical workforce.

NRMN Highlight: Dr. Ed Krug and His Contributions to Mentorship

The National Research Mentoring Network is made up of thousands of individuals and their contributions. Coaches, trainees, mentors, and facilitators each play a pivotal role in implementing and disseminating evidence-based best practices to improve mentoring relationships at institutions across the nation. 

One of those coaches that has inspired many over the past several years has been Edward Krug, PhD.
 
Dr. Krug currently serves as a Professor in the Department of Regenerative Medicine and Cell Biology at the Medical University of South Carolina located in Charleston. Beyond being a professor at his institution, Dr. Krug serves as Associate Dean for Postdoctoral Affairs and has been highly involved in NRMN for the past four years serving as a coach.
NRMN & Staff Supporting the Academic Research Enterprise

Kristin Eide-Boman, Assistant Director, University of Utah-Health, and Thaddeus Unold, Data Manager, University of Minnesota, presented preliminary outcomes of the NRMN Grant Writing Coaching Group programs at the 2019 National Organization of Research Development Professionals (NORDP) in Providence, Rhode Island on April 30, 2019.  Eide-Boman and Unold also shared lessons learned on implementing and managing coaching groups across the nation.  

More than 60 people attended the session.   NORDP  is a professional association dedicated to Research Development in higher education.  The sold-out conference attracted faculty and staff from across the nation.

The Georgia Clinical and Translational Science Alliance Hosts the 2nd Annual Georgia Clinical & Translational Science Statewide Conference

NRMN's co-investigator  Priscilla E. Pemu, MD, MSCR, FACP of Morehouse School of Medicine presented a feature session on Day 1 titled "Is Culturally Congruent Communication the Secret Sauce to Successful Adoption of Health Technology Assisted Self-management?", addressing the challenges with getting patients to utilize health technology applications to manage their health.

NRMN-CAN Mentor Training Workshops 2019 

NRMN-CAN, based out of the University of Chicago and managed by Program Director Nancy Schwartz, PhD, has organized professional development, grantwriting, and mentor training conferences over the past four years for attendees from the Big Ten Academic Alliance.  Since 2015, NRMN-CAN workshop participants have included postdocs and junior faculty (269 attendees), especially those from underrepresented backgrounds (54%), along with faculty and administrators who have received training as grantwriting coaches (34) and facilitators of mentor training (160), including 20 mentor facilitators who participated in the culturally aware mentor training workshop in 2018.

Upcoming Conferences and Opportunities
MET Building at UNT Health Science Center
June 6 and 7, 2019
 
The Texas Center for Health Disparities, at UNT Health Science Center will host its 14th Annual Texas Conference on Health Disparities June 6-7, 2019 in the MET Building. Conference participants & presenters will include clinicians, health policy makers, researchers, health educators, public and community health leaders, and students whose work incorporates the use of multidisciplinary partnerships that build collaborations to eliminate health disparities and achieve health equity. The conference will feature nationally renowned speakers and will highlight evidence-based clinical, community and policy approaches to improving maternal and child health across the United States.
 
This year's focus is on Social Epigenomics & Health Disparities;
Evidence based approaches that identify mechanisms by which social experiences at various stages in life, both positive and negative, affect gene function and thereby influence health in racial/ethnic minority and health disparity populations.
 
We encourage all students and faculty to attend the sessions and meet the presenters.

Opportunity to Attend Upcoming Facilitating Entering Research Workshop

 In this two-day event, participants will learn about Entering Research, a mentee training curriculum designed for undergraduate and graduate trainees who are involved in a mentored research experience.  
Participants will learn evidence-based approaches to mentee training and gain the knowledge, confidence, and facilitation skills needed to design, implement, and evaluate and assess training at their institutions.
