Upcoming Webinar: To Keep or Divest Your System Clinical Laboratory: Gain the Day, But Lose Tomorrow? The Unintended Consequences of Outsourcing the Lab

Strong dynamics in the laboratory industry and U.S. health care writ large place in-system laboratories at risk for divestment and monetization. The temptation to divest is great for corporate leadership: revenue compression from PAMA and other sources threatens both fee-for-service laboratory revenue and the monetizable value of the clinical laboratory. Substantive one-time payments from buyers are attractive one-time solutions for competing cash-flow needs.

Integrated system laboratories and independent laboratories that serve integrated health systems can successfully establish and hold their valued positions, serving as exemplars for peers. However, each clinical laboratory faces its own institutional challenges.

Join us at noon EST, Wednesday, Jan. 22, for a “fireside chat” that will bring two nationally recognized pathologists together to examine both the challenges facing the non-profit sector of the laboratory industry, and strategies for establishing strong positions for both laboratory preservation and growth.

CMS Lab Director Changes Take Effect December 28

Don't forget! Big changes are coming on December 28 to CMS qualification requirements for lab directors of moderate- and high-complexity labs. Our Lab Director Team has predicted this shift will primarily affect CLIA-Certified Lab Directors of moderate-complexity POL labs that may have a provider acting as the CLIA Lab Director.

If you're working to comply with these changes, Lighthouse specializes in connecting labs with qualified part-time lab directors who meet these updated criteria. You can also check out our recent blog for more details.

Celebrating the Holidays by Giving Back to the Charlotte Community

Earlier this month, some of our team members traded lab coats for aprons and got to work making a difference for the holidays!

We gathered at our Charlotte HQ to make 162 sandwiches for Roof Above, a local shelter and homeless service provider offering essential support to those in need.

We’re proud to be part of a team that not only supports labs across the country but also shows up for our neighbors. Here’s to spreading kindness (and maybe a little mayo) one small act at a time!

RCM NEWS AND TIPS

CMS Improper Payment Report Puts Spotlight on Lab Services for Future Auditing

A new improper payment report from CMS has placed labs in the crosshairs for potential billing audits and other actions, with documentation errors cited as the most significant ongoing issue. To compound matters, the Office of Inspector General (OIG) also recently updated its work plan to audit and review Medicaid payments for clinical lab services.

Both of these developments mean lab claim reimbursements, particularly for POLs and independent labs, will be under higher scrutiny by CMS in 2025 (and private payers are likely to follow suit). With that in mind, what can labs be doing now to ensure they are prepared if they receive an audit request?
