In honor of its 100th anniversary, The Guam Chamber of Commerce hosted its Centennial Jubilee on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at the Hyatt Regency Guam. Ernie Galito, Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Guam Chamber of Commerce, said, “The Guam Chamber of Commerce has been an unwavering pillar of support for our island's business community for a century. U.S. Chamber Updates

Challenging Government Micromanagement of Business

U.S. Chamber CEO Clark warns government overreach is "coming at a furious pace."

U.S. Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Suzanne P. Clark appeared on CNBC to spotlight challenges businesses face today, including the growing problem of government micromanagement.

Why it matters: Businesses face an unprecedented regulatory agenda across the nation. With Congress enacting relatively few laws, government bureaucrats have filled the void to push ideologically driven regulations that impact American industries and impose significant costs on businesses.

Companies have taken notice.

Our take: Clark emphasized that the federal government's regulatory overreach is one of the primary challenges facing companies today:

  • "We're talking about a trillion-dollar impact on regulatory costs," Clark said about the Biden Administration's overregulation. "Who pays that? Consumers and businesses."

  • "We're seeing more economically significant rules, and they're really coming at a furious pace," Clark added. "Our concern is that we also have unelected bureaucrats that tend to micromanage business at a really complicated time already to run a business."

National Survey: Voters Prefer Free Market to Govt. Micromanagement

Polling data from the U.S. Chamber shows voters are supportive of pro-growth policies and pro-business candidates who will help businesses create jobs.

  • Preview: 54% of voters say they are more concerned about government micromanaging private business versus allowing business to make decisions they think are best for their customers.

Chamber action: Across its 300+ areas of policy expertise, the U.S. Chamber is constantly looking around corners and anticipating the threats of tomorrow so businesses can begin planning today.

This means fighting aggressive regulatory threats from federal agencies when they arise. Last month, the U.S. Chamber filed suit against the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) over its unlawful attempt to ban noncompete agreements

  • Clark underscored that the government’s actions are “not only unlawful but also a blatant power grab that will undermine American businesses’ ability to remain competitive.”

  • “This decision sets a dangerous precedent for government micromanagement of business and can harm employers, workers, and our economy.”

Bottom line:  Every day, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce advocates against government overreach. When aggressive regulation is proposed, we will leverage every tool available to ensure it does not go unchecked. Watch Interview
