This issue is all about Flag Day and garage sales!

Greetings, Tutors!

On Monday, June 14, 2021, the United States will pause to recognize “Old Glory” on Flag Day and what it stands for. Observed every year on June 14, Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the United States flag by a resolution of the Second Continental Congress on June 14, 1777.

Celebrate by sharing Flag Day activities from this edition of Keeping In Touch with your student! Also in this newsletter are activities about garage or yard sales. It is almost the official start of summer, and the cultural phenomenon of garage sales abound. Introduce the material, practice several role-plays, and your student is ready to find new treasures!

English Conversation Groups

ESL Conversation Groups offer an informal and friendly environment for adults at an intermediate or above level to practice their English listening and speaking skills.

Literacy DuPage is currently offering five virtual (Zoom) ESL Conversation Groups and one in-person group. Although these groups are hosted by the following partner libraries, they are open to anyone in DuPage County.

For the summer only, this group will meet in-person and outside, weather permitting. Participants must register for each session, and must bring their own chair or blanket. In case of bad weather, the group will meet on Zoom.

Community Resources

The Illinois Rental Payment Program can provide emergency assistance up to $25,000. The property owner and tenant jointly apply for this relief.

The Elmhurst Walk-In Assistance Network is designed to offer emergency assistance to clients who find themselves in a difficult situation. Eligibility: resident of Elmhurst, children in Elmhurst school, or member of a covenant church in Elmhurst. Visit elmhurstwalkin.org to learn more.

Oakbrook Terrace Salvation Army Community Center:

Curbside food pantry Monday through Wednesday, from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. and Thursday 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. Food boxes may include shelf-stable pantry items, breads, cereals, meat and other household necessities.
