Good Morning Tutors!

Volunteers remain the backbone of Literacy DuPage. Without you, we would not be able to meet our organizational vision and mission to serve the community. Although Illinois has entered into Phase 3 of COVID-19, Literacy DuPage continues to suspend face-to-face tutoring. We encourage and support you as you continue to meet with your student doing whatever method you have done these past months. Do not hesitate to reach out if you have questions or need help with tutoring strategies during this time. Be well, and take care.

With gratitude and hope,

DuPage Federation Resources:

This past weeks' DuPage Federation Human Service Provider’s Meeting focused on housing issues and needs. Following are links to information and a summary from the meeting:

  1. Find rental assistance resources at DuPage Community Resource Information System (dupagecris.org).
  2. Landlords may not file new non-payment eviction cases with the court until after May 29, at least, (though they may still issue eviction notices, and existing eviction orders cannot be enforced until after May 29, at least. DuPage eviction court is closed until June 5, at least. Rent is still due. “Self-help evictions,” that is, evictions by any means other than sheriff action are illegal; call the police if landlord changes locks, shuts off utilities, removes belongings. Undocumented persons may be eligible for Prairie State Legal Services in some circumstances (domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking). Human service providers – send clients to Prairie State Legal Services, intake hotline (630)690-2130 Mon-Thu 9 am – 1 pm or pslegal.org. Language assistance is available.
  3. The courthouse is open to get orders of protection, and domestic violence shelters are open with safeguards. Human service providers – refer clients to DuPage Legal Aid (630)653-6212 Mon-Fri 9 am-2 pm. Please check in on those you suspect are in danger.
  4. Rental assistance and eviction protection will not be sufficient for some. DuPage County Information and Referral is a valuable resource for assessment and links to services. (630)407.6500, 800.942.9412, TDD 630.407.6502, Mon-Fri 8:00 am - 4:30 pm (see flyer attached for weekend and street outreach phone numbers). Human service providers - do affordable housing advocacy – speak to those who can influence change. Bring the issue to the forefront and make it a priority.
