Greetings!
Tutor ID Number:
Good Morning Tutors!
Given the current events, thank you, tutors, for continuing to support and help our students develop their voice, feel empowered, and have the confidence to advocate for themselves and their families. Do not hesitate to reach out if you have questions or need help with tutoring strategies during this time. Be well, and take care.
A NOTE REGARDING THIS WEEK'S NEWSLETTER:
This week's edition is focused on domestic abuse/domestic violence. DuPage County services providers have seen an increase in the number of reported incidences occurring in the county. Domestic abuse/domestic violence is a problem, regardless of who the victim is – woman or man. This is a human issue and a non-gender specific one. As I researched ESL curriculum and instructional materials to share with you, I was surprised that there is very little ESL curriculum around this topic.
Domestic abuse/domestic violence is defined as physical, sexual, emotional and/or mental. Any form is unacceptable. I believe an essential instructional goal for tutors is to increase your student's awareness of domestic abuse/domestic violence and the surrounding concepts which affect people and families. We do not want anyone to suffer in silence. We want those affected to have the courage to speak up and out. No one should have to suffer violence or abuse in any relationship. Often, children involved in the family relationship will take the scars from their exposure to the family dynamics into adulthood.
With gratitude and hope,
Carol Garcia
