Keeping In Touch, Volume 21
Greetings!

Tutor ID Number:

Greetings Tutors! This edition is focused on two of October’s events: Columbus Day and Fire Safety.

Frequently, many materials designed for students about Columbus relate to the typical story that most of us have learned in school. They typically don’t encourage critical thinking skills by bringing in perspectives held by many indigenous groups, nor do they celebrate indigenous peoples’ presence, endurance, and accomplishment. Dozens of U.S. cities and the entire states of South Dakota, Hawaii, Vermont, Minnesota, and Alaska now celebrate “Indigenous Peoples Day” instead of Columbus Day. There’s even a Wikipedia page describing the holiday designation. As a tutor, you have the ability to refocus the practice of celebrating Columbus to celebrating and recognizing indigenous peoples.

Fire Prevention Week runs from October 4 - October 10, 2020. Fire is a real danger. The National Fire Protection Association reports that nearly half of all home fires involve cooking equipment, with unattended cooking being the most common cause of these fires. The resources in this newsletter will help your student increase their awareness of fire prevention and safety.

We continue to recognize your commitment to your student and your efforts to maintain contact with them, whether on a casual basis with a friendly check-in phone call or adapting your tutoring practices. Thank you for your genuine interest and dedication. Your efforts do make a difference in the lives of our students and their families.

As always, please do not hesitate to reach out if you have questions or need help with tutoring strategies during this time. Be well and take care.

With gratitude and hope,
