October is recognized as Health Literacy Month. A general definition of health literacy is the ability to read, understand, and act upon health information. With the rise of COVID-19 in our geographic area, we want to ensure our students develop the skills and confidence they need to maintain their health. Included with this newsletter are links specific to COVID-19 health literacy curricula as well as the link to a free short, self-paced tutor training course available from the Florida Literacy Coalition.
The observance of Armistice Day is not limited to the United States. Other countries around the world also have such observances. As a tutor, you want to help your student not only understand the language but also comprehend the nuances of the culture. This would include learning about the observance of Veterans Day. Use the resources in this edition of Keeping In Touch to talk about and understand veterans and their sacrifices and history.
As always, please do not hesitate to reach out if you have questions or need help with tutoring strategies during this time. Be well and take care.
With gratitude and hope,
