BIG IMPACT DURING COVID-19

As Central Oregon continues to do its part to social distance, wear a mask and keep our hands washed for the greater health of our community, continuing the personal connection between our Bigs and Littles is more important than ever to ensure every child's potential remains defended.

As the pandemic spread across our community, it became evident that the youth and families served by Big Brothers Big Sisters were some of the hardest hit by this pandemic. Thirty percent of our Littles had parents/caregivers that have lost jobs, 40% are struggling with food insecurity and 25% of our youth did not have access to sufficient technology to finish out the school year at home. Not only were families in crisis but they had lost access to almost every social support designed to help them.
Because of your support, BBBSCO staff and mentors were able to spring into action!

  • Delivering food to 17 Littles and their families in Deschutes, Jefferson and Crook County
  • Assisting families with unemployment applications
  • Providing 20 laptops for youth who were attempting to finish school on a parent’s cell phone (A huge thank you to G5 for their generous donation of laptops!)
  • Advocating for our Littles to receive internet access at home to finish school
  • Partnering with Avion Water to ensure youth have access to enriching activities through the purchase and delivery of 100 Lego sets! (Thank you Avion Water for generous donation!)
  • Delivering 70 civil face masks to Littles and their families, donated by Blackstrap Industries
Keeping Kids Connected
During this difficult time, when so much has changed, it has meant so much to the Littles to be able to stay connected to their BIGS! Many Bigs have found activities to do together that promote social distancing but still allow for their relationship to be maintained! From bike riding, to Frisbee, to visiting dog parks, matches have found a way to stay connected!
Summer Camp Unleashed!
Little Sister, Stefanie is enjoying martial arts classes with her Big Sister Becky thanks to Trinity!
Each summer, Trinity Episcopal Church in Bend raises money and works with Cove Christian Camp to send 30 of our Littles to a week long summer camp in Eastern Oregon. Due to Covid-19, camp was cancelled this year, but that didn't stop Trinity Church from making sure our Littles have an opportunity for enrichment activities during this time of isolation.

Because of this partnership, instead of spending time in front of the tv, Littles are getting to spend their summer doing new things they have never done before! Littles are taking horseback riding lessons, marshal arts classes, renting kayaks and taking driver's education courses!

Thank you to Trinity Episcopal Church for their generosity and support of the needs of local youth!
$5000 Raised by Graduation Campaign

Thank you to everyone who donated to the Graduation is a BIG Deal Campaign! Last month, the campaign raised $5000 to support the graduation efforts of youth in our community that need it most!

This year, 100% of the high school seniors in Central Oregon with a Big Brother or Big Sister graduated from high school on time, exceeding the national average by nearly 40%. These eight youth involved in Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Oregon face barriers to graduation even in the best of circumstances, several being the first in their families to graduate high school and go on to secondary education. Their mentors, support and encourage their Littles, some since young adolescence through high school graduation.

The Littles who have received their high school diploma are more likely to raise their children above the poverty line, have children that will graduate from high school and maintain steady employment. Graduating from high school will change these kids’ lives forever!
Big Impact Partner Spotlight

Since 2002, Hayden Homes has defended the potential of 2,400 youth in Central Oregon by being an IMPACT Sponsor with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Oregon! Not only have they provided financial support to ensure youth have access to the life changing mentors that they need, but their staff have also become mentors themselves and served on the Advisory Council!
