The Building Industry Association of

San Diego County Welcomes Aimee Faucett as Incoming President & CEO

The Building Industry Association of San Diego County (BIA) announced the appointment of Aimee Faucett.

Faucett will focus on ensuring the building industry has a powerful, unified voice, pro-housing voice that shapes policy and public conversations. Her priorities include reigniting urgency around the housing crisis, ensuring the BIA leads strong coalitions to counter anti-housing campaigns, and empowering BIA members to educate leaders and the public about the real costs and challenges of homebuilding.

IN THE KNOW

BIA San Diego News You Should Know

City Council Approves College Area and Clairemont Community Plan Updates

On December 16th, the San Diego City Council approved the College Area and Clairemont Community Plan Updates, both by a 7–1 vote, though the vote composition differed for each item.

The BIA was present to speak in support of both plans and provided nuanced comments reflecting the perspectives of our membership.

In the College Area, we supported the plan’s significant increase in density. We emphasized that the infrastructure and community amenities sought by residents are only possible through the investment in new housing and the fees contributed by builders. The final plan included tenant protection language modeled after the Barrio Logan plan, added at the request of Councilmember Elo-Rivera. Councilmember Raul Campillo ultimately voted against the plan, citing community concerns.

In Clairemont, the BIA expressed support, with two caveated concerns, based on member feedback. We encouraged the City to moderately and thoughtfully upzone transit corridors along Clairemont Drive and Clairemont Mesa Boulevard, consistent with the City’s approach in other community plans. We also raised concerns about the inclusion of the Rose Canyon Operations site, which presents challenges unless it is formally designated surplus land or has a realistic path to that designation—raising questions about whether those housing units should count toward the plan’s total.

Despite these concerns, the Clairemont Plan was approved without revisions. The BIA looks forward to continued collaboration with Neighborhood Homes for All to identify and advance more appropriate homebuilding opportunities in the area.

We also appreciate Councilmember Vivian Moreno for directing staff in the Land Use & Housing Committee to respond to BIA’s inquiries, and Councilmember Joe LaCava for highlighting the disparities in density between the College Area and Clairemont plans.

Project Greenlight

Ryan Companies, Oceanside Development

A Project Greenlight request has come in from Ryan Companies for their development of 373 mixed-income apartments (38 for low-income households) and 17,500 sf of commercial space envisioned as cafes and/or shops to complement the downtown Oceanside community. The site is located just blocks from the pier on Mission Avenue and Myers Avenue; the public hearing is anticipated for January. All support is appreciated, but those who live or work in Oceanside are preferred.

Associate Member Spotlight

A note from our Director of Operations & Membership, Shannon Gaunt:

"I focus a lot on the member experience. I recently had a call with a new member, Kelly Cameron from Planet Apparel who is so excited to become involved. I asked Kelly about her New Member Liaison and Below is what she had to say about Charlie Seelig. Well done on your contributions Charlie. Thank you."

As a new member of the Building Industry Association of San Diego, I was paired with Charlie Seelig as my new member liaison — and I couldn’t have asked for a better introduction to the organization. From the moment I reached out, Charlie responded within minutes and scheduled a video meeting just two days later.

What stood out most was his warmth, enthusiasm, and genuine passion for the BIA’s mission. Before we even discussed which council might be the right fit, Charlie took the time to ask what I’m most passionate about. We quickly found common ground in our shared concern for San Diego’s housing crisis, and that connection made our conversation feel both purposeful and inspiring.

Charlie’s clarity, encouragement, and sincere dedication made me feel instantly connected to the community and excited to participate. It’s rare to meet someone who represents an organization with such energy and heart. Thanks to Charlie, I feel confident and supported as I begin my journey with BIA San Diego. He truly embodies what the association stands for — connection, collaboration, and community.

BIA Cares Rides into the Holidays with Annual Bike Drive Deliveries

Through its annual Bike Drive, BIA Cares once again demonstrated the power of community by delivering donated bikes to children and families throughout the region. These deliveries brought tangible support and big smiles to organizations serving youth who face unique challenges.

This year’s recipients included Pro Kids Golf Academy, which empowers youth through education and sports, and San Pasqual Academy, a one-of-a-kind residential campus supporting 55 full-time foster youth in a stable, nurturing environment. Bikes were also delivered to families at the Navy SEAL Training Base, helping support children of service members who give so much to our country. Additional partner organizations included as part of the distribution efforts include:

  • Promises2Kids - Foster Kids
  • Salvation Army Kroc Center - Disadvantage Kids Support
  • Barrio Station - After School Program in Barrio
  • StarPal Foundation - After School Programs w/SDPD
  • SD Center for Community Solutions - Domestic Violence Family Support
  • Doors of Change for Foster Kids
  • Urban Street Angels - Foster Kids
  • Youth Assistance Coalition - Homeless Kids

The deliveries were carried out by BIA members Mark Hartley and Eric Jones on behalf of BIA Cares, whose dedication and personal involvement helped bring this initiative to life. Their efforts exemplify the mission of BIA Cares, turning generosity into meaningful action. For the 31st year, BIA Cares continues to give to our community.

We would like to give a tremendous thank you to our members for their generous support which makes all this possible.
