Fairgrounds 2050
State Institution to Craft New Plan for 324 Acres of Land
The 22nd District Agricultural Association, which produces the San Diego County Fair, has kicked off a countywide public outreach effort as part of a planning effort that should culminate with a new master plan in 2027.
The future of the Del Mar Fairgrounds, which is set to undergo significant changes over the next two years as part of a new master plan called Fairgrounds 2050. The 22nd District Agricultural Association, which owns the land, has initiated a public outreach effort to gather community input for the plan. The master plan aims to envision a new future for 324 acres of land, including the fairgrounds and adjacent sites, to be fully realized by 2050.
Key points include:
- The 22nd District Agricultural Association operates three sites and generates revenue through events like the San Diego County Fair.
- The master-planning initiative has been in progress for over five years and is now shifting to a community-led approach.
- The future of the fairgrounds is undefined, but potential developments include hotels, housing, shops, restaurants, and office space.
- The master plan must allow for the annual fair and the fairgrounds to serve as an emergency resiliency center.
- The planning process involves public awareness campaigns, surveys, and workshops to gather input.
- The final master plan will be developed through a design competition and undergo environmental review, aiming for certification by 2027.
- Current attractions and activities, including horse racing, will continue during the planning process.
-
The initiative seeks to ensure the fairgrounds remain a vital community asset for the next century.
