BIA Cares Scholarship Program

Investing in the Future

The BIA Cares Board of Directors is proud to announce the recipients of this year’s scholarship awards, supporting students pursuing careers in San Diego’s building industry.

This year, 20 students applied, and 13 scholarships totaling $15,000 were awarded to high school and college students. Individual awards ranged from $500 to $1,500, and six students also received Y/GEN memberships, connecting them early to the industry.

Interviews were conducted in November and December, both in person at Hunsaker & Associates as well as via Teams, with Jessica, Marcia, and Peggy leading the process. Two board members participated in each interview to ensure a fair and thorough evaluation. Students were notified of their awards in January.

Applicants were evaluated on financial need, GPA, extracurricular activities, essay responses, interview performance, and commitment to continuing in the building industry. This year’s essay explored the theme “Balancing Tech & Human Value: Innovation & Leadership,” reflecting on the growing role of AI in everyday life. The strength of the applicant pool made selections especially difficult.

One recipient, Julie Cohen, is a junior at SDSU majoring in Real Estate & Business Management and currently studying abroad in Prague. She serves as Director of Professional Development for The Real Estate Society of SDSU and is excited to join BIA as a Y/GEN member.

The Board extends its gratitude to all applicants and volunteers and is honored to support the next generation of industry leaders.

Council & Committee Corner

Specialty Contractors Council (SCC): This council is in place to move forward issues that pertain to the sub-contractor. Educational seminars and other specific sub-committees will be the driver of this group. This council is open to anyone who is a BIA member and can attend the SCC board meeting each month.

Sales & Marketing Council (SMC): This nationally awarded council represents all of the categories that support the sales & marketing functions of the industry. The individuals range from sales/marketing representatives of builders to all companies that feed into this group such as interior designers, signage companies, designers, mortgage companies, etc. The SMC is an ideal group for anyone in sales, marketing, or new business development for the industry.

Young Generation of Leaders Council (y|GEN): This is an ideal council for anyone in the industry under 35 years old. Professional growth and ability to network with others who will be in leadership roles at the same time in the future is a big appeal for joining. Your separate Y|GEN membership dues include access to a mentorship program, skills seminars, building tours, and council-specific social networking events.

Build SD PAC: Advocating for our members on the issues that affect the Building Industry, and supporting positive change throughout government.

Membership Committee: This group focuses heavily on the member experience. From educating our membership on all of the benefits available, to being a liaison to our new members, they work to provide maximum value and support. The Membership Committee is dedicated to growing our membership which provides more support to our legislative efforts, more council & committee involvement and helps strengthen our association.

Responsible Accessory Dwelling Committee (RADU): The Responsible ADU Committee brings together builders, designers, policy advocates and other industry professionals working to make accessory dwelling unit (ADU) development in San Diego more predictable, consistent, and achievable. We collaborate with city and county agencies, utility providers, and state partners to improve how ADU policies are written, interpreted, and applied.

Communications Committee: Pull all BIA Communications, internal and external, under one umbrella. Increase membership engagement and awareness. Improve education and opinions on housing, the BIA, and its members. Focus engagement internally on members and member’s networks – especially the 21,000 people BIA members employ – through existing channels and resources and not via paid marketing campaign, but through the talent within our BIA members in the form of a committee.

BIA Cares: We build and contribute to projects that facilitate charitable outreach on behalf of San Diego’s building industry. The Building Industry of San Diego believes in giving back to the community it serves. In 1990, BIA established this 501(c)3, charitable organization to help build a better future for those in need. BIA Cares has donated more than $2.3 million to charitable projects and programs in San Diego County.

Most BIA San Diego council & committee board meetings are open to attend. Please reach out to Shannon Gaunt for more information. Shannon@biasandiego.org

2nd Annual Veterans, Family Members & Skilled Workers Job Fair hosted at the Home Builders Institute (HBI) building in San Marcos

This event is more than just a job fair-it’s a movement. We are bringing together veterans, their family members, trade school students, and skilled workers to help bridge the gap between talent and opportunity in the construction industry. This is your opportunity to give back to those who have served our county while strengthening our workforce and our community.
