COVID-19 UPDATE
New restrictions for North Carolina residents
As a reminder, Governor Roy Cooper has placed North Carolina under a Modified Stay at Home Order after a rapid increase in key COVID-19 trends.

As of Friday, December 11, all residents are required to stay at home between the hours of 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. Travel to and from work; to obtain food, medical care, fuel, or social services; or to take care of a family member is exempted.

The order will remain in place until at least
January 8, 2021.
STAY SAFE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

STAFF SPOTLIGHT: CORPORAL GRAHAM SMITH
Introducing the people behind the Town
Meet Corporal Graham Smith

If you're a fan of the Town's annual shred event, medicine drop, and National Night Out, then you know his work.

Corporal Smith joined the Cornelius Police Department in 2015. He spent his first few years in patrol, including a two-year stint patroling Lake Norman.

In 2019, Smith was promoted to Corporal and began overseeing our popular PD-sponsored community events.

From Coffee with a Cop to our annual senior luncheon, Corporal Smith takes pride in giving back to the community that supports the PD so well.
"I'm fortunate to work in Cornelius," Smith said. "The Police Department is very supported by the community, and I love having the opportunity to support them in return. We try to go above and beyond to have a positive impact on the community, especially nowadays. That's the 'Cornelius Way.'"
One of the highlights of Corporal Smith's year is our annual Christmas Adoption Program. Each year, the PD works with community leaders to identify local families in need of a little holiday help.

"Once we have a list of names, we then reach out to the community looking for families to 'adopt' another family for the holiday," Smith explains. "The response from the community is incredible. In fact, we usually have more help than we can handle!"
The sponsor families shop for and wrap gifts to be delivered to the family in time for Christmas. Pre-COVID, the sponsor family could travel with the officers to deliver the gifts, allowing the two families to meet and greet.

"It's a beautiful thing to witness," said Smith. "The families are extremely grateful for the help and the sponsor families are grateful for the opportunity to give back."

This year, the Christmas Adoption Program looks a little different. Sponsor families will drop the gifts off at the Police Department, and the officers will safely deliver them next Saturday, December 19.

Special thanks to Corporal Graham Smith, the entire PD, and our supportive community for making this event a success from year to year!
