Tree removal and Tree Maintenance
It is the law in Maryland that you must have a licensed tree expert for both pruning of large trees and/or removal of trees more than 20' tall. Without a license, contractors are not permitted to practice or advertise tree care services in the state. They must possess adequate and related college, education plus training, and carry a specific amount of liability and property damage insurance as set by the state.

To find a licensed professional or verify a license, go to the MD DNR website here. You may also call the Maryland Home Improvement Commission at 410-230-6309.

Are Tree Limbs or Bushes Blocking Access to the Sidewalks in Your Area?
We've recently received several calls and emails about tree limbs and bushes that overhang and block the sidewalks in the public right-of-way throughout Harper's Choice. Homeowners must regularly prune back the bushes on their property so that the entire width of the sidewalk is accessible and prune the tree limbs up to a height of at least 7' off the ground. Contact the Village office when the limbs are from a county street tree (located between the curb and the sidewalk. We will contact the county on your behalf.

Maintaining the Trees on Your Property
It is each homeowner's responsibility to maintain the trees on their lot, in addition to the maintenance of the house and other structures. Regular assessment and pruning of trees on one's lot is a sound investment in the beauty and benefits provided by the tree canopy. Pruning mature trees can open up the canopy, allow in new sunlight and help make the trees less susceptible to wind damage and falling during storms.
