Free

June 8th from 2:00-4:00 p.m. in Joseph Square. Wear Orange is dedicated to honoring the lives of Americans affected by gun violence and elevating the voices of every American who demands an end to gun violence. With the support of HCCA and in collaboration with Neighbors for a Vibrant Harper's Choice, the public, family-friendly event will include children's crafts and activities, speakers, entertainment, gun violence survivor resources, community resources and refreshments. We will arrange for local nonprofits and community organizations to set up information tables at the event with a focus on safety, access to community services and programs that provide positive experiences for youth. Together, with Harper's Choice residents, elected officials, faith leaders, students, educators, gun violence prevention advocates, community and business leaders and members of the Howard County community at-large, we will gather to share our commitment to making our communities safer from gun violence.

EFFECTIVE MOSQUITO CONTROL TIPS

Mosquito season is here! You may be unwittingly contributing to the large mosquito population in your yard. YOU can help reduce their numbers with these tips:

· Eliminate standing water in rain gutters, old tires, buckets, plastic covers, toys, or containers where water will    collect (mosquitoes breed in standing water).
· Do not use black, flexible drain extensions - the ridges collect standing water and hold thousands of mosquito    larvae!
· Change the water in bird baths, fountains, wading pools, and potted plant trays at least once a week to              destroy potential breeding habitats.
· Fill temporary pools of water in your yard with dirt.
· Rake ivy beds to dislodge moist piles of deteriorating leaves and hidden water pools.
· Keep pond or fountain water treated and circulating.
· Clear roof gutters of debris that block the flow of water into the downspouts.
· Drill holes in the bottom of recycling bins or containers left outside.
· Repair leaky outdoor faucets promptly.

IVY GROWING UP YOUR TREES?

English Ivy is invasive and can damage trees. Ivy should be removed for proper tree maintenance.

· Cut a circle of English ivy around the tree trunk about 1 foot off the ground and free that section completely        around the trunk. The remaining ivy on the tree will eventually dry up, fall off or can be easily removed. Large    vines may require a saw. Don't pull the ivy off the tree, it may damage the bark.
· Pull ivy from a 2-3 foot circle around the tree trunk, pulling as many roots as you can. Twice annual (spring        and fall) trimming will keep the ivy from growing back up the tree.
· Cautiously dispose of the plant; ivy re-sprouts easily!
· USEFUL TOOLS: pruning shears, a portable saw for thick vines, a forked garden hoe to pull multiple vines        from the ground, gloved hands and elbow grease! Be sure to wash gloves in hot, soapy water when done in      case some of the vines were poison ivy.
