Eagle Scout Kenneth Russo

Congratulations to Garces senior Kenneth Russo!
On June 5th, the Boys Scouts of America held a Court of Honor for Kenneth where he was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout. His service project was building a storage shed for St. Philip the Apostle Church. The shed will serve as a California Redemption Value Storage and will be used to collect and store the CRV items (cans and plastic water bottles) for recycling.

Tommy's team is sponsored by Dignity Health Mercy & Memorial Hospitals and John's team is sponsored by Bank of the Sierra. Being selected to Dream Builders is a big honor. It is a highly competitive process and we are very proud of them!

Congratulations to Scott Boylan and Patrick Burke who were honored by the Bakersfield Jockey Club as Outstanding Student Athletes for their respective sports on Monday, September 19th, at a luncheon at Hodel's. Scott was honored for Football and Patrick for Water Polo. They are true scholar-athletes. Scott has a 4.4 GPA and Patrick has a 4.5 GPA. Both young men are stand outs in the class room and on the playing field, or in Patrick's case, in the pool!

The Lady Rams Golf Team took first place at the Lemoore High School 6th annual golf tournament and haven't slowed down since. They are currently the SWYL league leaders! ! Congratulations to Joshua Gonzales and Damian Wimberly on being selected to represent Garces this past summer at the Pepperdine Youth Citizenship Seminar. Each year, approximately 1,200 Youth Citizenship Seminar applications are received from public and independent high schools throughout Southern California. 250 students are selected based on a variety of strengths in the fields of scholastic, athletic, musical and theatrical accomplishments.

Hometown Sports named Conor Athlete of the Week for his play against Arroyo Grande the following week.

Garces Artists

Over the summer, Garces began working on one of the 33 mini-trucks for the Bakersfield Museum of Art's "Driven By Art" project. Garces Art Instructor, Mr. Mark Brown recruited some of our very best student artists and they created a "Van Gogh Recycled" project utilizing items like plastic bottles, aluminum cans, and pull tabs. The student artists who worked on the project are Cherry Wang, Kimberly Mielke, Olivia Wooner, Belen Cazares, Vedant Vaidya, Kathryn Koenig, Francesca Shattuck, Maggie Waguespack, Lee Begin, and Kristen Vibal.

Congratulations to the Varsity Boys Water Polo Team on winning the Garces Water Polo Tournament. The boys went undefeated beating BCHS, Taft, and Lemoore. Members of the team are:

Every summer, Cal State Bakersfield offers a program called REVS UP through their School of Natural Science, Mathematics, and Engineering. The program is funded by Chevron and is geared towards high school students to increase their interest in science and mathematics careers. REVS-UP offers hands-on research experiences for teams in biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, geology, mathematics, and physics. Several Garces students participated this summer. Photos are of Garces students Claudia Millar, Damian Wimberly, and Eduardo Munoz taken by Garces teacher, Mrs. Jennifer Kloock, who went and supported the students during their final team project presentations.

Iceland Trip
YOLO...
Accompanied by Garces instructors, Ms. Jessica Pavletich and Ms. Mandee Dees, Garces students traveled to Iceland this summer. They were able to earn college credits while touring Iceland and learning all about their habitat. They traveled all over south eastern Iceland and saw amazing views and learned a lot about their environment and way of life. Some of the sights they saw were: Reykjavík, the Settlement Exhibition, the Music Hall, the Lava Fields, the Gullfoss Waterfall, Arnessysia, Icelandic horses, Eyjafjalllajökull, black sand beaches, and the Icelandic Puffins. The students visited a farm that uses the earth's energy to bake bread and another that used solar energy to grow tomatoes. They also hiked a glacier and swam in the world famous Blue Lagoon.

Marisa Edmonston
Be The Change....
Congratulations to Garces senior Marisa Edmonston on her appointment as a member (alternate) of the inaugural Bakersfield City Youth Commission. The seven members and alternates were chosen from 24 local high school students and will advise the Bakersfield City Council on needs and concerns of local young people. The Commission was established in January.

Garces Basque Dancers
Heritage...
This summer several Garces students - future, past, and present - traveled to Washington, DC, to proudly take part in a wonderful event that allowed them to showcase their Basque culture. The Smithsonian Folklife event highlights a different culture every summer, and for the first time ever - it was the Basque culture. The Smithsonian asked for Basque dancers to perform and, with the hard work of Garces parent, Maria Toretta, and others, they were able to get 27 dancers to particiapte. Of those 27 dancers, 18 are affiliated with Garces.

Football Team Summer
Community Service Project
Doing good...
On Saturday, July 16th, over 40 Garces football players volunteered to help distribute over 13,000 pounds of food to over 500 families at a CAPK Food Bank food distribution. They did a great job and we are very proud to see them giving back to the community and demonstrating kindness to others.
