The keynote presentation will be by Jeffrey Keithline, who practices food and drug law with Keller and Heckman.

Keithline's one-hour presentation will provide an overview of US and EU food-contact requirements, and describe steps to avoid pitfalls with environmental marketing claims, including claims for recycled content, recyclability, compostability and biodegradability. He will also discuss evaluating compliance under state and local requirements, including California Proposition 65 and various toxics in packaging laws.

Keithline, who has been with Keller and Heckman since 1998, works with companies on compliance issues relating to the manufacture, labeling and disposal of packaging. He will bring his expertise to Focal Point in a presentation titled "Evaluating the Legal Status of Packaging: Untangling a Complex Web of State and Federal Regulations."

Focal Point 2013 targets challenges and opportunities in the packaging and converting industries. In addition to Keithline, the conference features a full slate of experts representing important aspects in the current landscape of the packaging and packaging-materials industry. On the program are Lisa Bauer-Lotto, Green Bay Packaging; Paul Fowler, WIST; Paul Gardner, Recycling Reinvented; Amanda Humes, Conagra Foods; Gopal Iyengar, NewPage Corporation; Chris Reitmeyer, IPS; Jeff Timm, Timm Consulting; and Wayne Wegner, Bemis.

Check out the conference website for speaker profiles and more conference information. Registration is now open for this conference. Early bird registration is $150 through September 27.

We've put together a short video describing the compostability testing service we're now providing. WIST tests packaging materials to determine whether they meet standards for compostability under ASTM D6400 or D6868 standards. Contact John Baldus or Paul Fowler to discuss how this service may help in your product development or marketing efforts.

WIST and two of its research partners will be featured in a session at BioForward's 2013 Bioscience Vision Summit in Madison September 18. The panelists will describe opportunities to derive high-value products from low-value waste materials such as wood waste, agricultural residuals and paper mill sludge.

The panel will be moderated by WIST's Paul Fowler, with presentations by Eric Singsaas, Director of Research at WIST; Ali Manesh, CEO of American Science and Technology Corporation; and Phil Brumm, chief scientific officer at C5.6 Technologies. Read more about the presentation here. And here's a link to register for the Bioscience Vision Summit.
