As I sit on the House floor in the final hours before the Third Reading deadline, I’m pleased to have sent eight bills over to the Senate for consideration. They join another bill that’s still pending in the Senate from last Spring, HB3711 which represents the work to address the horrific abuses revealed in a Tribune investigation into sexual abuse of patients by medical providers. We are still negotiating final language with the Illinois Health and Hospital Association and hope to finish our work shortly.
On Thursday night as we left the floor after 10pm, I learned that former House Majority Leader Barbara Flynn Currie had died. She was my seat mate on the floor for the first seven years I served and when I tell you I had the best seat in the House, that’s not an exaggeration. When you’re appointed to the House, you move into the office, floor seat, and parking space of your predecessor, which are always much larger/better positioned than a brand new member would be assigned and appointees are quickly informed that they shouldn’t get too comfortable as they’ll be bumped by someone with more seniority at the beginning of the next term. My predecessor Harry Osterman had long sat next to Barb, so in addition to his double office and close to the Capitol parking space, I got that seat. I very quickly made clear that I was fine losing the office and the parking space, but that I would defend that seat with my very life.
Leader Currie was probably the smartest person I’ve ever known and getting to see her exercise her amazing skills up close was literally a daily master class in policymaking, debate, leadership, and humanity. She delighted in talking to the boys when they visited and set up their fort under my desk and quickly discovered that they were a great source of intel for cool gifts for her grandchildren. I knew her for many years before I entered the General Assembly through my work with Chicago NOW and had looked up to her from the moment we met, so I especially treasure having gotten to share the last years of her amazing career with a front row seat. There have been some amazing tributes written about Barb and her impact on our state, some citing her impact on women in politics, others calling out specific accomplishments, but my favorite referred to her as the one of the most consequential legislators the state produced in the 20th century.
Barbara Flynn Currie, Hyde Park's state legislator for 4 decades, dies at 85
Barbara Flynn Currie, 40-year veteran of Illinois House, trailblazer for women in Springfield, dies
Barbara Flynn Currie, 'trailblazer who opened doors for generations of women' dies
With third reading deadline behind us, I’ve advanced eight bills to the Senate:
HB4075 cleans up the process for objections to the 3 year old law creating a process for people with certain criminal convictions to access name change proceedings,
HB4255 builds on our state’s humane policy of prohibiting the use of elephants in traveling exhibitions and adds similarly vulnerable animals such as non-human primates, bears, and big cats to the law,
HB4428 will mandate that defendants on pre-trial release receive at least 2 text reminder notices for upcoming court dates,
HB4826 prohibits the issuance of continuing professional education credits for practices that are prohibited in the state,
HB4834 will purge records of testosterone prescriptions from the Prescription Monitoring Program and will prohibit inclusion of medications used in abortion or gender affirming care if the federal government adds them to the list of scheduled drugs,
HB4839 allows the Department of Public Health to create a new form that will allow funeral homes to provide services to families who experience a spontaneous pregnancy loss prior to 20 weeks gestation and for any termination of pregnancy. (Current law only allows for a fetal death certificate to be issued in the event of a spontaneous loss after 20 weeks of gestation),
HB4966 calls on the Department of Children and Family Services to take proactive steps to ensure that any youth being placed out of state maintains the same rights as they would enjoy in Illinois,
and HB5411 will allow Certified Veterinary Technicians in the state to provide rabies vaccinations under the direct supervision of a Veterinarian.
These are in addition to HB3711 which will create procedures and accountability measures for medical professionals and facilities that abuse patients. This bill is from last spring and is still being negotiated, but I anticipate we’ll be moving it soon.
| | It was another busy and fun filled weekend in the district too. On Saturday, we had a great time at Care For Real’s 2nd Annual Trivia Night Fundraiser. Our table was certainly not Jeopardy ready, but we had a good time raising money for an organization that has done so much to support our neighbors in Edgewater and Rogers Park. Sunday was the ultimate Andersonville day: we started with a delicious brunch from Lady Gregory’s, then met 14th district resident and environmental leader Jen Walling for the Illinois Environmental Council’s Earth Day Pop Up Flash Tattoo fundraiser. We chose the belted kingfisher from the flash art of the talented artists at Evoke Tattoo Studio. The kingfisher is particularly special to Candace and me because one flew through our wedding out in Wyoming and when we visit my brother in Florida, we spend time out on his patio where a kingfisher has taken up residence hunting in his canal. Of course, you can’t go to Andersonville without doing a little shopping, so we hit The Brown Elephant where Candace scored an authentic Members Only jacket, then over to Rattleback Records for some new vinyl. Finally, I was pleased to get to help The Swedish American Museum kick off their 50th anniversary celebrations alongside Congressman Mike Quigley, Alderwoman Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth, and staff from Senator Mike Simmons’ office. The museum is such a treasured part of the community - I have fond memories of taking my kids to the Children’s Museum of Immigration as well as attending so many wonderful neighborhood gatherings in their gorgeous (and growing!) space. If you haven’t checked it out, make a point of getting over there. | | This week is another week where the House is the only chamber in session, with the Senate flying solo the following week. The chaos of last week’s absolute crush of humans trying to move around the Capitol and meet with members was insane, and it’s precisely because we’ve organized the calendar so badly. The Senate hasn’t really sent a lot of bills over to us for consideration, having extended their deadlines when they left Springfield after cancelling their Friday session, so it’s not entirely clear how much we have to work on, but it will be good to have some time to sort through the debris of this week’s chaos and get set for the second half of session. To any constituents who were not able to connect with me last week, I’ll have some availability to meet either in person or virtually during the Senate only week when I’m hoping to catch up in the office and finalize some negotiations. We did manage to connect with a few different lobby groups including Abundant Housing Illinois, The Illinois Arts Alliance, Centro Romero, ONE Northside, and a few others. | | SNAP Program Work Requirements Are Now In Effect | | |

Valborg is a Swedish tradition that marks the arrival of spring and is often seen as an opportunity to bid farewell to the winter months. One of the central elements of Valborg celebrations in Sweden is the lighting of large bonfires. These bonfires are typically lit in public spaces, such as parks or community squares, and people gather around them to socialize, sing songs, and enjoy the warmth of the fire. In addition to bonfires, other common activities during Valborg include singing traditional songs, particularly ones associated with spring and nature.
The Andersonville Chamber of Commerce invites the community to gather around the fire for their third Valborg in Andersonville! In addition to the festivities and in celebration of Earth Month, they will have eco-friendly and sustainability resources available.
