As I sit in my living room on Sunday evening, contemplating (last) Friday’s unwritten newsletter, there’s a lot to unpack between session hitting the busy stretch, making sure my 3 guys in 3 different locations get their votes in before Tuesday, and making sure I’m keeping up with work in the district (and in my house) in the few days I’m home between session days.
In session last week, we advanced another bill through committee with HB4409 which will add two members to the board of the successful Adult Redeploy program which funds programs at the local level aimed at reducing incarceration rates across the state by 25% who have been program participants to better represent the needs of the community in funding decisions.
We head back to session on Wednesday, with our schedule shifted by a day to accommodate the primary election on Tuesday. The committee schedule for the week is here. Click here to view the schedule.
I am looking forward to presenting a bill I’ve worked on for a few years that was brought to us by a constituent who has struggled with chronic pain for years, complicated by the hurdles the state puts in the way of physicians and patients that frequently results in patients being cut off from legal access to meds and resorting to the street market, too often leading to tragedy. Through our work with the constituent who brought us the bill, we’ve learned so much about the challenges of living with chronic pain and the ways our laws have made a bad situation worse for so many people. HB5373 will align Illinois law with federal guidelines on prescription management for chronic pain management and protect the information in the statewide prescription management program from misuse.
We have three days of session this week, followed by a break for Easter week before a final week of committee action leading up to the April 5th deadline to move bills out of substantive committees.

You Could Have Unclaimed Property! | |
ICASH, Illinois’ unclaimed property program, reunites Illinois residents with missing money, such as forgotten bank accounts, uncashed checks, stocks, dividends, or life insurance policies of deceased relatives. Since taking office in 2015, Treasurer Frerichs has returned more than $1.9 billion. An estimated one in four Illinois adults discover property to claim when they search and the average claim is $1,000. Yet, many Illinois residents are not aware of the ICASH Program or that they have unclaimed property. The State Treasurer is holding more than $5 billion in unclaimed funds and would like to see even more money returned to Illinois residents.
