Kelly's Update

Sorry this is later than usual, but June is kicking my butt. Going directly from an all-nighter for adjournment and waking up on the first day of Pride Month is extra special when you’re an openly gay elected. If I could manage it, I honestly could be at multiple Pride events and commemorations every day of the month. I’ve hit a lot of them though and am particularly excited for this weekend’s culmination of our festivities with the newly re-imagined North Side Queer Pride festivities all over Rogers Park and the big event Sunday -  the Pride Parade!

From my very first Pride Parade that involved driving about an hour from my home to the closest “big” city in St. Petersburg, FL to today, my relationship with the Pride Parade has evolved over the years. There’s really nothing like that first experience of being among your people when you’re just figuring out who your people are, and I honestly can see that day clearly in my mind. We can never underestimate the value of finding yourself in a community that so many folks get to experience by being at the parade, even as larger celebrations like ours have moved away from the spirit of protest and rebellion that is at the core of Pride Celebrations.

For years, I was excited to participate in the parade - we used to be able to have floats and cars in the parade section for elected officials and it was like a moving party with friends and family joining us to march and celebrate with hundreds of thousands of our closest friends. More recently, I’ve been less enthusiastic as pressure to shorten the parade meant more corporate entries and less focus on the real origins of Pride: the brave reactions of the patrons of the Stonewall Inn who fought back against bar raids and police brutality and kicked off the modern LGBTQ+ civil rights movement. In reality, Stonewall wasn’t the first place folks decided they’d had enough and fought back, but it was the tipping point.

My Pride observance has evolved over the years to better reflect those origins. I still go down to Uptown to see everyone at the pre-parade reception hosted by Equality Illinois, but I’ve tried to recreate some of that sense of community I felt in my first parade experience as best I can. For the last couple of years, we’ve been very excited to join with the merchants from the Jarvis Square al fresco area to host Family Pride and last year kicked off a new tradition of a Kids and Family Pride Parade around the neighborhood. Led by Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss juggling, it was a joy filled moment in the middle of a time when LGBTQ+ kids are painfully aware of the national debate about their existence.

This year, our team has been working for months alongside other local electeds, businesses, and community members to plan two days of amazing opportunities to come together in community in the newly reimagined North Side Queer Pride. Family Pride on Jarvis Square is moving to Saturday, and the parade route will be extended slightly. The day kicks off with some toddler friendly entertainment and we’ll be there with sign and button making materials for folks who want to get their pride on. At 1:30, I’ll read a few Pride related books for the kids and then the parade kicks off at 2! After that, the entertainment continues, but shifts more towards a traditional pride party!

On Sunday, there will be more entertainment on Jarvis Square as well as Cobblestone Pride along Glenwood between Lunt and Farwell, near where the old Pride North party used to be held. The rest of the weekend includes something for everyone: a Board Game Meetup at Athena Board Game Cafe, a Trans and Nonbinary Meetup at Jarvis Square Tavern, a BIPOC Business Popup on Paulina north of Howard, and a screening of a film about one of the very first times folks fought back against raids and brutality that tells the story of the Compton Cafeteria riot three years before Stonewall.

For me, being closer to community and centering the stories of the folks with the most to lose in these fraught times helps me capture the spirit of Pride. For folks who are doing the parade, be safe, have fun, hydrate, wear sunscreen, and hop on the Redline after the parade to join us at Jarvis or Glenwood to keep the party going!
