Kelly's Update

I spent a good bit of time last week hearing from friends and colleagues here and around the country checking in on each other in the aftermath of the assassinations of two members of the Minnesota Legislature. Political violence is becoming more commonplace, and it was helpful to connect with each other to talk through our feelings and experiences and contemplate actions and policy options that the situation seems to require. Some years ago, we passed a law to redact the home addresses of judges on publicly available election documents after some high profile attacks on judges in their homes and the possibility of allowing all candidates for elected office to have their information redacted after certifying their eligibility to hold office in that district was often mentioned. Several members are discussing other possible options to enhance the safety of elected offices at all levels. Events like this not only impact the people currently in office. They can have a chilling effect on those who could consider running for office but decide the risk is too great, potentially depriving us of great leadership on both sides of the aisle.

I spent the weekend trying to manage the heat while making a couple of stops. On Saturday, I was glad to join with Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss and advocates from organizations such as the ACLU and Trans Up Front, as well as trans youth, parents, health care providers, and educators to condemn the recent US Supreme Court decision in US v Skrmetti upholding the state of Tennessee’s law barring access to health care for trans youth.

Some pictures from our Pokémon & Pride: Trans Youth Resource Fair event last Friday. The event was a hit and we would like to extend a HUGE thank you to our partner elected offices, organizations, and community members who took part in making it a success!

Rep. Cassidy speaking at the Protest of the SCOTUS Decision of US v Skrmetti in Federal Plaza on Saturday

Sunday brought the long awaited ribbon cutting for Care for Real’s new building in Edgewater. I was proud to have secured early money in state grants for this nimble and effective organization to finally purchase their own building with enough space for their clients to receive the wrap-around services they need, finally eliminating the need for clients to wait outside in all weather to access services as was the case in their old space on Sheridan Road.

Executive Director Gregory Gloss, Chair of the Board of Directors Blair Harvey, Representative Cassidy and Senator Simmons posing for picture at the Care For Real food and clothing support ribbon cutting ceremony. The new location is located at 5840 N. Broadway and is open on Mondays from 4PM - 6PM, Wednesday from 9AM - 12PM and Saturday 9AM - 1PM.

I’m excited to share our experiences with our Gender Based Violence Resentencing Act with colleagues across the country in a Criminal Justice Policy Summit convened by the National Conference of State Legislatures this week. I’ll be back in time to join Alderwoman Maria Hadden’s office at a 626 Block Party Town Hall outside her office at 1447 W Morse Avenue from 4-7pm on Thursday.

This coming weekend will bring us the annual Pride Parade and festivals. Saturday, I’ll return to the lakefront to cheer on the runners at Proud To Run. Sunday, I’ll once again skip the parade for a more personal celebration. I’m looking forward to cohosting the kids tent at Family Pride North on Jarvis Square with my colleague Rep. Lindsey LaPointe. We’ll have story time, snow cones, and some supplies to make art and signs, then we hope to have a mini parade of our own for fest goers!

In the meantime, the garden is exploding with blooms and greens and I’m excited for making more of our meals from what we’re growing. Right now, we’ve got lots of greens and radishes, but all of the good stuff is just around the corner. I can’t wait for the first tomato sandwich of the season!

Jeff recommended!

Breaking news: the Martians have landed…in Chicago! Our world is watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than ours, yet just as mortal. They regard Earth with envious eyes as they craft their violent plans to destroy us. How on Earth will we survive? This world premiere adaptation of the novel by H.G. Wells brings razor-sharp satire to this infamous thriller. Ensemble members John Hildreth and Heather Currie, the team behind Cat’s Cradle, reimagine this sci-fi masterpiece for a modern audience.

The Curious Circumstances of Louis Le Prince

Nearly every history textbook will attribute this invention to Thomas Edison. But as with most of his inventions, the story is much more complicated. In fact, French inventor Louis Le Prince perfected such an apparatus years before Edison even thought of applying for a patent. But here's the twist! Le Prince intended to travel to New York to unveil his invention and solidify his place in history, until he vanished mid-transit from a moving train without a trace; leaving the way open for Edison to reveal his own oddly similar creation. Now Le Prince's widow Lizzie and his son Adolphe must pick up the trail of their missing husband and father and fight to defend his legacy against America's celebrity inventor Thomas Edison himself.

Half Victorian-era mystery, half courtroom drama, The Curious Circumstances of Louis Le Prince explores how we struggle with unresolved tragedies and how we remember (or don't remember) the people in our history.
