Kelly's Update

As in the shootings of Marimar Martinez and Silverio Villegas González during Operation Midway Blitz, the accounts being peddled by the administration attempting to justify their murders of Renee Good and Alex Pretti: people exercising their right to protest are undeniably contradicted by the actual and horrific video that circulated widely. While we are seeing some rearranging of the deck chairs as we learn that Bovino is being moved out of his role and some portion of the troops deployed to Minnesota are being removed, this entire operation, all of its tactics, every individual involved, must be removed from their roles and held accountable for their roles in this attack on our constitution or it’s just window dressing.

As I spent last week talking to friends in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, I was struck by the sheer scale of the operation on their relatively smaller geographic footprint relative to our area. While many of us regularly saw ICE/CBP operations in our areas, there were parts of our area where it was not a ubiquitous event. Hearing from friends that you literally couldn’t go to the grocery store or down the block without running into rapid responders, ICE/CBP agents or both.

Knowing that nothing could really convey the sheer overwhelming scale of this operation, I asked a neighbor who recently returned from Minnesota to share his first person account of what he saw and experienced for our newsletter this week.

“No longer can we engage in the luxury of passing by on the other side. Such folly was once moral failure; today it can only lead to universal suicide.”

- Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., ‘On Being a Good Neighbor’, 1963

I and a few of other fellow residents of the 14th district recently returned from Minnesota. We went at the request of friends and organizers up there who are experiencing a full-fledged invasion of their neighborhoods, and we wanted to share some of what we witnessed happening to our neighbors to the north with you.

It’s…crazy up there. While I’ve seen the unconstitutional and vicious behavior of ICE and CBP up close here in Chicago many times, the twin cities are a third of the size of Chicago and have 5x as many agents storming their streets. You cannot avoid them racing up and down the streets, assaulting citizens, refugees, and immigrants alike, or count on dodging their weapons.

We witnessed agents randomly stopping Somali immigrants and chasing them through an icy park, just because they were walking down the street while black.

We witnessed protesters being beaten by half a dozen agents.

We witnessed ice agents using chemical weapons indiscriminately against local residents and choked on their tear gas.

We witnessed agents swarm our car, even though we were 100 yards away from them observing.

But We also witnessed the scared eyes of agents who know that they’re losing the moral battle and seeing a wave of people rising up before them.

We witnessed Native American men guarding a Somali day care.

We witnessed a trans former military officer teaching people in a coffee shop situational awareness and how to protect their neighbors.

We witnessed neighbors swarm out to their house when ICE cars took a moment to confer on our block.

We witnessed an amazing, unbreakable and cold-resistant community warmly embracing one another.

We witnessed a people waking up to their own power and realizing they have neighbors they never knew they had.

We witnessed our neighbors fighting for our neighbors.

There are not two fights, one here in Chicago, and one in MN. Today, there is one neighborhood. There is ONE fight. There is one way out. ONE WAY OUT. And we cannot pass by on the other side.

As we head back to session, I continue to collaborate with colleagues here in Illinois and around the country on identifying tools states can use to push back against federal overreach. I’m very proud that Illinois’ law on federal accountability included in ICIRR’s Safety and Action for Liberation Together (S.A.L.T.) platform (HB1312) has been a model for other states that are working to enact the same protections based on our example. Similarly, our Dobbs Working Group members have been connecting with members across the country seeking solutions for patients losing access to reproductive and gender affirming care in light of relentless pressure and threats from the federal administration and will be presenting legislation to ease the burden families are facing by the bill introduction deadline of February 9.

Congressman Mike Quigley and his staff recently visited the district. Chief of Staff Taylor joined as they toured the North Side Housing Men's Shelter with Alderwoman Maria Hadden's office, stopped by the Rogers Park Metra Station, and toured the archives of the Gerber Hart Library.

If you’re a worker or parent in Illinois, filing your taxes this year can put hundreds– even up to $650– back in your pocket.

Neighborhood Shoutout

Andersonville Paper & Pencil

Congratulations to Paper & Pencil for being featured in an article at WEBZ Chicago about the growing popularity of stationery stores! We in this office love a good planner or notebook!

From the article:

Stationery stores like Paper & Pencil — packed with stickers, fountain pens, washi tape, planners and notebooks — have seen sales surge. But it’s not because consumers are looking to get organized in the new year, though it has been a factor. Chicago shop owners credit social media and influencers who have marked this year as a return to analog, opting for physical media, entertainment and, yes, pens and paper.
