The UT Martin Skyhawks are the main course on the menu for Kennesaw State's’ Homecoming festivities in a non-conference matchup this Saturday at Fifth Third Stadium. This game marks an important test for both programs as they look to get things moving in a positive direction after slow starts.

The Matchup

The Skyhawks enter this contest with a 1-3 record, coming off a narrow 31-24 loss to Missouri State last weekend. Despite the losing record, UT Martin has shown flashes of potential, particularly on offense. Quarterback Kaiya Sheron has been a bright spot, completing 74.1% of his passes for 213 yards and 2 touchdowns in the team’s last outing.

KSU, on the other hand, is still searching for its first win of the season, sitting at 0-3. The Owls are in their inaugural season as an FBS program after transitioning from the FCS level. This move has presented significant challenges, as evidenced by their struggles in early season matchups against UTSA, Louisiana, and San Jose State.

When sizing up this week’s opponent, Head Coach Brian Bohannon sees a team that is much better than its record. “You look at the last three years, they’ve either won their conference or a share of it…predicted to win again this year,” he said.  Indeed, the Skyhawks have gone 25-10 in their last three seasons.

Previewing UT Martin

Getting ready for a really good UT Martin team. You look at the last three years, they've either won their conference or a share of it...predicted to win again this year.

They've been in one possession games, maybe the Kansas State game.

The coach (Jason Simpson) has been there a really long time, does a good job.

We've got to prepare and execute better. We did get some guys back, which is encouraging. Gabe (Benyard) and. Carson Kent practiced. Seaburn Hines is a little banged up. Que Billingsley practiced. We're hopeful, as the week goes on, he'll be back.

Jason Simpson Weekly Presser Previewing KSU

This is kind of a bad deal. When the contract was signed, they were FCS. They came here. They had a good team, they beat us. They make the declaration to move up a level and expand scholarships.

Now, they're 85 compared to 63. I don't know that that's anybody's fault. But, you need to write those contracts tighter to benefit your program.

We're their homecoming game, their only FCS game. I'm sure they're looking to get well against us.

We're banged up pretty good right now. They're very stingy against the run. On the flip side of that, we play the run pretty well, but, haven't played the pass very well.

Owls Volleyball Opens Conference USA Play With Pair Vs New Mexico State

Kennesaw State volleyball gets ready for their first ever Conference USA games since joining as New Mexico State comes to the KSU Convocation Center for a pair of games this weekend.

NMSU enters the match with a balanced 6-6 record after a recent non-conference victory against Incarnate Word, where they showed resilience by winning three consecutive sets after dropping the first one. Key players like Yasso Amin and Ashley Herman have been pivotal, contributing in kills and energy.

KSU, on the other hand, has had a challenging season so far with an overall record of 3-8. They have struggled at home, yet managed some wins on neutral grounds.

The Owls are coming off a tough non-conference schedule, including a recent loss to Furman.

Kennesaw State will look to junior Manu Johnsen for offense. Both games will be streamed live on ESPN+, with Friday's start at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

KSU Soccer Hosts First Ever CUSA Matches This Weekend

There were a handful of "firsts' for KSU in the 1-0 win over Jackson State. KSU captured the first win of its season, the first win as a CUSA member and the first in the Chris Cahill era.

Senior Macie Rainwater has been superb for the Owls as she leads the team in goals scored (4) while totaling 80% of the teams scores on the season.

Now, the Owls host their first actual Conference USA matches on Thursday against Louisiana Tech and Sunday against Sam Houston.

The 2-3-4 Bulldogs are coming off their first conference match of the season where no points were scored in a home draw vs Western Kentucky. Free T-shirts at the gate for the Thursday 7:00 p.m. start.

The Bearkats are 4-3-2 on the season after an upset 3-2 win in their CUSA opener against New Mexico State. SH senior Andrea Nugent was named Defender of the Week for her performance in that Sept. 19 game. Sam Houston has another conference match on Thursday at Jax State before coming to Kennesaw on Sunday for a 1:00 p.m. start. Free pink towels will be available at the gate.
