The Kent Stater Wants to Know How You Will be Spending Winter Break
Edan Kraus, the International Correspondent for the Kent Stater, is preparing an article for the newspaper about how Kent State International students will be spending their time during Winter Break. If you are interested in sharing your plans with Edan, contact her at: She will be glad to hear from you.

Winter Tips For Student Tenants
While I am gone over winter break, is it all right to turn off the heat in my apartment in order to save money?
This is NOT a good idea. Many students believe that it is appropriate to turn the heat off in their apartment while they are away during winter break. However, the few dollars that might be saved in doing so are NOT worth the risk of causing extensive damage to the apartment due to the possibility of frozen water pipes. Winters in Ohio can be very harsh and temperatures can fall far below freezing. Even if your apartment is on the inside portion of a very large complex, you cannot rely upon the heat from other units to sufficiently keep your unit warm enough to prevent pipes from freezing. So, leave your thermostat set at least 60° F (15.5° C).
What happens if water pipes freeze?
Once heat is restored to the residence, or temperatures rise outside, the thawing action of the frozen pipes will cause them to burst. If the pipes burst, there is nothing to prevent the water from escaping the pipes. The resulting unchecked flow of water will likely flood your residence and adjacent apartments. In severe cases, the water could even jeopardize the structural integrity of the building itself.
Under these circumstances, who is responsible for replacement of my personal property and repairing any damages to the apartment?
Ohio's Landlord and Tenant act as stated in section 5321 of the Ohio Revised Code requires that tenants refrain from intentionally or negligently damaging the landlord's property. In other words, you would be legally responsible for reimbursing Student Legal Services the landlord for the costs necessary to repair the damage caused by your actions. Plus, the landlord would not be responsible for replacing any of your belongings that were ruined.
