Alumni Returning to Campus for HomeComing 2017
Between now and October 14 as you walk around campus and hear news about upcoming events, you may notice that the word 'homecoming' keeps appearing more and more - and with good reason. Homecoming is an event which American universities and colleges have been celebrating for decades. It is a time to honor and celebrate an institution's past graduates (better known as alumni) and welcome them back to campus. For many alumni, life on campus was their first "home-away-from-home." So for them, returning to campus following graduation often feels like "coming home." The returning graduates enjoy exploring the changes which have occurred on campus while they have been away and reuniting with old friends and acquaintances.
While each individual university has its own unique and varied traditions, homecoming usually involves two key events - a homecoming parade which features marching bands, floats and displays, and a game of American football between the university and an arch-rival school.
Over the years, the events which have celebrated Kent State's Homecoming have evolved and the time frame has grown from a single day to a full week of activities. Events this year include such diverse happenings as the celebration of the School of Nursing's 50th anniversary, an open house by the College of the Arts, the always popular International Homecoming Celebration and much more.
The big day this year, though, will be Saturday, October 14, which will begin with a fun-filled Homecoming Parade in the morning. Later that afternoon, the Homecoming Game will get underway with our own Kent State Golden Flashes taking on the Redhawks from the University of Miami. A tail-gate party will precede the football game during which "Flash Nation" will drum up fan excitement for the upcoming game with food, music, fun, games and good cheer. Everyone is encouraged to attend!
Homecoming is truly a fun, exciting and important time for current students to appreciate the community of people which has helped sculpt Kent State. It is also a time for many generations to come together to have some fun! The best part about homecoming is that even after you have graduated from Kent State and moved on to your professional career, you are forever invited to return each and every year to join the celebrations!
