Keys to Student Success - Housing

My off-campus housing lease states that I have to buy renter's insurance.  What does that mean - is it a rip off?
We highly recommend that you purchase renter's insurance, even if the lease does not require it. Renter's insurance protects both you and your landlord . For example, if a water pipe suddenly bursts, your electronics and other personal property may be ruined. Unless the landlord knew ahead of time that the pipe was faulty and neglected to repair it, he is not liable for your loss.

Renters insurance also protects you if you negligently cause damage to an apartment. For example, if you are not careful while cooking and cause a fire, you will bear responsibility for the cost of restoring the apartment which may be thousands of dollars. If you have insurance, your policy will cover the loss. These are just a few examples of why it is important to protect yourself with renter's insurance. Renter's insurance can be purchased through any licensed insurance agent. As with any insurance, you should shop for good coverage and a good price.
