Dear Kent,
Kent’s 2024-25 season begins with Musica Sacra on October 16, a program of Bach, Pärt, Tavener, and premieres, and culminates with the world premiere performance of the Paul Moravec/Mark Campbell oratorio All Shall Rise with the Oratorio Society of New York at Carnegie Hall on May 5. In between – even more musical riches!
Among the additional highlights: Musica Sacra’s Carnegie Hall holiday program of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven with guest soloists Susanna Phillips and Simone Dinnerstein (December 18), and the return of the “SurRound” 360° concert after a sold-out 2023 debut (April 1); Bach’s St. Matthew Passion (March 8), “Joy of Christmas” (December 14), and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 (December 31) with the Cathedral Choirs of St. John the Divine, and the inaugural recital of a series celebrating the return of the Cathedral’s Great Organ after a six-year silence (February 4); and Carmina Burana (November 11) and Messiah (December 23) with the Oratorio Society of New York. Kent is also guest conductor of The Harlem Chamber Players’ Annual Bach Concert, leading a program of concerti and arias with soloists including Davóne Tines (November 22), and joins The Dessoff Choirs as one of several guest conductors, along with the music director, Malcolm J. Merriweather, for “Brahms’ Requiem: Celebrating 100 Years of Dessoff” (November 2).
Kent’s choruses are participating in some of the New York season’s notable events: Musica Sacra in the New York Philharmonic’s performances of Messiah, led by Ton Koopman (December 11-14), and the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream led by Gustavo Dudamel (October 9); and the Oratorio Society of New York in A Concert for the Children and Youth of Ukraine – A Benefit for Direct Relief at Carnegie Hall, joining the Orchestra for Ukraine, led by Christoph Eschenbach, and others in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 (October 23).
Kent is also featured in two public television series this year: Confluence, a new series on the PBS streaming service exploring the enduring connections between art, science, and creativity, in a segment about the pipe organ, and season six of the All-Star Orchestra, an American Public Television series of concerts led by Gerard Schwarz, in “A Symphonic Organ Spectacular” that features Saint-Saëns’ “Organ Symphony” with Kent as soloist.
This fall also includes organ recital benefit events for the Oratorio Society of New York (September 14, Amenia, NY), Musica Sacra (September 21, Stone Ridge, NY), and those who lost their homes in the Spencer, Iowa, flood (October 18, Des Moines, IA).
