University of Kentucky Ag Equine Programs announces its second equine-oriented digital photography contest. Submissions will be accepted through Feb. 28.
All are encouraged to participate, from students to the general public. There are three age divisions for submissions: UK students, youth (17 and under) and open (18 and over).

Prizes will be awarded to category winners of each age division as well as the opportunity to be featured in the program’s monthly newsletter, The Wildcat Canter, and other UK publications.

2022 Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event Will Host Para Dressage and Para Jumping Demonstrations
|
|
The Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event presented by MARS Equestrian (LRK3DE) will host demonstrations in Para Dressage and Para Jumping when it returns to the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY, April 28-May 1, 2022.
Organized by Equestrian Events Inc. (EEI), the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event presented by MARS Equestrian™ features one of only seven annual Five Star three-day events in the world as well as the $225,000 Kentucky CSI3* Invitational Grand Prix presented by Hagyard Equine Medical Institute. Known as “The Best Weekend All Year,” the event annually attracts more than 80,000 spectators who also enjoy extensive shopping, a variety of hospitality experiences and a wide array of demonstrations.
This year's demonstrations will include Para Dressage, the only equestrian sport in the Paralympic Games, and the emerging sport of Para Jumping. Working with EEI in organizing the demonstrations are Para Dressage rider Rebecca Hart, who has competed in four consecutive Paralympic Games, and Wren Blae Zimmerman, a blind Jumping rider who competes in USEF-recognized competitions and has the ultimate goal of helping Jumping become a Paralympic sport.
“We are incredibly excited to host demonstrations in both Para Dressage and Para Jumping,” said Mike Cooper, president of the board of Equestrian Events, Inc. (EEI). “What Rebecca Hart and Wren Blae Zimmerman do as riders is incredibly impressive and an inspiration to anyone faced with physical or other challenges. We are thrilled to join with them in presenting demonstrations of their sports at our event!"

Breeders' Cup Classic Winner
Alphabet Soup Dies at 31
|
|
Multiple graded stakes winner and 1996 Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) victor Alphabet Soup was euthanized Jan. 28 at Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement farm near Georgetown, Ky., where he has been pensioned since 2015. The cause of death was chronic kidney disease.
At 31, the gray son of Cozzene was the oldest living winner of the Breeders' Cup Classic.
Bred in Pennsylvania out of the Arts and Letters mare Illiterate, Alphabet Soup was a late bloomer for owner Georgia B. Ridder, winning his first stakes at 4 when he captured the 1995 Native Diver Handicap (G3) and the Del Mar Budweiser Breeders' Cup Handicap (G2).
In 1996 he was the victor in the San Antonio Handicap (G2), the Pat O'Brien Handicap (G3), and the San Pasqual Handicap (G2) en route to his greatest triumph, the 1996 Breeders' Cup Classic, where he defeated the "invincible" Cigar as well as that year's Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Louis Quatorze, all while setting a new track record at Woodbine.
David Hofmans trained Alphabet Soup.
"I just want to see him within a length of someone somewhere late," Hofmans said as he left the paddock before the Classic in a story that appeared in BloodHorse. "Because this little horse will absolutely lay his body down."
Hofmans marveled at his tenacity watching a Classic replay, saying “Look at him. See that look he gets on his face, how he lays those ears back and sets his jaw.”

2018 Bay Thoroughbred Gelding
By George is a 16.3 hand 4-year-old gelding by Into Mischief out of Phoenician Moon (Malibu Moon). Exceptionally bred, he is a true athlete and race winner. He last raced at Turfway Park on 1/23/22. He retired sound, just slow.
An energetic boy, he will need an experienced rider/handler with patience to help him adjust to his new life. He has adjusted well to farm life but can get rambunctious at times. He will need a consistent work schedule but thrived off of consistent leg pressure and asking for flexion. Can be a bit stubborn at times but wants to be good and wants a job. He stays quiet in the stall once he gets to know his neighbors. We have not noted any vices and were not told of any injuries.
He stood well for our vet and he did not find any issues with him.
By George is eligible for the 2022 Retired Racehorse Project Thoroughbred Makeover.
